What do you think about film/movie remakes?

Hollywood often has the bright idea that a blockbuster film from the classic years could find a whole new audience, and make oodles of cash at the box office, if they have another go at it. Examples include Psycho, which featured Janet Leigh in 1960 but Anne Heche in 1998, and True Grit, in which John Wayne from 1969 was replaced by Jeff Bridges in 2010.
But are the new versions ever any better than the originals? Can you think of any that were improved by the remake?
And can you think of any titles that might benefit from a remake given that the plot and dialogue were excellent but the original actors not up to the mark?

What do I think about remakes? As little as possible. The only remake I've loved is the 1956 remake of The Ten Commandments.
We're also getting a lot of reboots of old TV shows in America. Of course, a lot of "classic" TV series were remakes (e.g., Stanford and Son and All in the Family were based on British TV programs, and shows like M*A*S*H and The Odd Couple were based on films).

@indexer — yes, the original Ten Commandments was silent. It was also directed by Cecil B. DeMille.
I loved the original Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) but the only thing the remake did for me was improve the special effects (I read they spent nearly 3/4 of a million pounds on them). Well, to me, it also massively wasted Tom Baker’s talents.

Remakes has been happening since silent movies. Can't think of a decent remake.

for me the original is far the best on these two movies.
Star is Born made three times. The earliest one with Janet Gaynor I did not see.
Judy Garland was the second this is far the best.
Barbra Streisand one was good.
Lady Gaga one got are kind of review.
Not sure if the young audience saw the Streisand one.
for me Judy was the best second.Barbara.
At this time cannot think of any.

I personally don't like remakes. It ruins the original story and charms of the movie.

I haven't seen too many re-makes, but they are never the same....I've always preferred the original when I did see a re-make.
