How to Get A Child's Attention?

My husband and I have noticed that Eli really gets distracted when he is signing his name in his book at school in the mornings. All he has to do is write his first, middle, and last name and then he's done. What should only take him a few minutes took him around 20 minutes today. Today one of his teachers told us that he was really distracted in class today. I am not sure if he just wanted to get up and play, or if it was because he didn't want to be at school. We've done all we know to get him to do what he's supposed to, but it still doesn't work. If you have kids his age (or when your kids were his age) did they get distracted like that? If so, what did you do about it?

I don't think he's too unusual for only being three. Some three year olds can't even write their names yet.

@MALUSE There are three year olds in the class writing their name. Well, they mostly trace their name, but still.

@MALUSE Not competing...just wondered if the distraction was a normal thing at this age.

Yes, if he wants to and can I appreciate that...I mostly just wondered if anyone else's kids do this. Another kid in his class sometimes takes a while too
