My MacBook charger cable frayed and isn't working now. Also the same has happened to a couple of my phone chargers. How can you prevent this? Attaching a picture for reference.

This is almost certainly because you are yanking the connection out of the socket by tugging on the cable. Always pull the plug out by holding the plug itself, NEVER the cable.

I'm usually pretty careful about putting on and removing the cable. On the Mac, it's magnetic so really don't need to pull it off. I thought that it was more bending and twisting that caused this.

@pitstop It looks like a combination of the two to me.... either that, or you have mice!

@owlwings nope. The laptop has a touchpad... and the old mouse has no batteries.... so they couldn't have sneaked out and eaten the cables.

Owl About has good advice. We don't have much trouble with fraying cables thankfully.

The cables have lasted 4 years on the Mac and at least 2 years on the phone chargers. So it's not a recurrent problem.

So that is what they call that fraying. I think it really comes to a point that fraying happens. I am very careful With my cable but in time this happens. I even get this plastic coveredaround it but eventually this cover does break and when it starts you can never stop it.

I've found even good quality cables ultimately fray. I just bought a cable called Boat indestructible cable bits quite stiff. Hope it lasts.

My daughter uses some kind of plug at the connection to prevent her cables from fraying. I’ve never experienced such fraying but my problem is the connector itself being bent by my grandson when he tries to pull it out of the gadget. He will always bend the connector and damage it. You can also use the spring that you can find in a pen and wrap it around the cable to prevent fraying. Refer to the image attached.

I've heard of this spring method. I'm trying out a plastic thing similar to the spring to see if it works.
