The Reason We Were Offline

Windstorm Saturday night took this Jackpine and hung it up in the power lines. This caused a short circuit which blew the breaker on the end of our road. No electricity, no phone, and no Internet until someone could come and fix it. They couldn't come for four days because this storm did a lot more damage than this little tree. Apparently, 97000 homes and businesses were without power because of 1020 broken, damaged or shorted out power lines across the province. Because we are the only people connected to this particular power line, we're pretty low on the priority list. That's also why we are fairly well prepared for this type of emergency. When help finally arrived, it came in the form of two retired Hydro Quebec workers who were called in to help from that neighbouring province. Francine was tickled to be able to go chat with them while they made repairs (she was also making sure that we were not accidentally overlooked). I could have removed the tree myself (I've handled far more dangerous hangers than that one). They don't really want people like me messing about with their equipment. The line itself was fine once they got the tree removed. We're fine as well. Hopefully, we won't have to deal with this sort of things anytime soon again.

At least we know that that particular tree is no longer a problem. I doubt if it will be that bad.

@Morleyhunt Last week's wind did more damage than hurricane Earl did when we first got here. I don't expect this to get duplicated anytime soon (fingers crossed).

@koopharper I don't expect it to be near the wind of last Saturday evening....but then Port Colborne had some Nast weather this week and they are apparently sending it out to us.

We would manage for 4 days. But we would be cold as we have no wood heat. Need to make it possible to run the furnace fan with the generator. Glad you are back online.

We have wood for heat with propane for backup. My son was able to hook up a fluorescent light to one of our old car batteries. The only real issue is the fridge. We just narrowly avoided losing too much of the weeks groceries. Our losses were minimal, we just lost our ability to communicate with the outside world.

This one was unusual so I'm not expecting to have to deal with this again soon.

Yes, a big pain in the posterior. Glad to be back online. Some of that deadwood on the ground is good for keeping us warm this winter, so I've got some work to do.

It could be dangerous because there might be live electricity wires.

Could be but wasn't. The two breakers on the line ahead of this spot were both off. I checked. I still didn't want to try to interfere by doing some of the work ahead of them.
