There were no mobile phones while I was working

I was just wondering how I would have been able to discipline those working under me if mobile phones existed at that time. A rule to switch off phones during office hours would perhaps be objected to by the Union which always was a spoke in the wheel when it came to rules. Wonder how the present Management handles this situation.

I've been out of the workplace so long I don't know how businesses manage this problem - and I'm sure it would be a problem.

Even using the Internet for personal access could be a problem too.

@allknowing That's very true. One girl lost her job in my husband's workplace as she spent the whole day playing freecell. The IT guy was able to log what she had been doing all day.

Many places have a rule of no personal phones here while working.

That would be the only solution but here in India we have a union that always gets in the way of Management rules.

@allknowing Even the union shops have those rules. Too many people dont get anything done if they have their phones

@wolfgirl569 That indeed is a temptation.

Here people tend to find people by mobile phones as it will be more directly. You don't have to wait for the transfer or the one is away from the desk. The phone calls also include the working calls, even in your spare time.

There are plus points and minus points bringing in mobile phones into offices.

We were given walkie talkies when we were away from our desks and had to carry them throughout the school and outdoors. They really came in handy. We weren't allowed to use our cellphones except during lunch and breaks.

If discipline is followed all is well but I wonder if that is the case everywhere.

That is very strict rule, maybe a regulation to lessen the time of using phone.

There will always be arguments. What if there are urgent messages as though that was not the case even before there were mobiles.

And these arguments need to be given consideration.
