Northern Europe / Baltic Sea Cruises

United States

Next September, I am taking a cruise from Copenhagen to Berlin, Tallinn, St. Petersburg, Stockholm and Helsinki. Has anyone taken a similar cruise or been to any of the cities that I have mentioned? I have been reading reviews and one cruise this past September had very bad weather ruining the cruise for most of the passengers who posted. Three out of five ports had to be cancelled due to weather. Is bad weather in the Baltic Sea region during the month of September typical or was it one of those flukes?

I just recently relocated back to the states from Latvia. I lived in Europe for 20+ years. Latvia is by the Baltic Sea you can never really rely on the weather. It can be great and it can be very bad. I was always complaining about it anyway. For instance one year we had frost in September and snow in October. Then another year summer stayed around for most of September and October. If I were you I would check things out online thoroughly. Too bad you won't stop in Riga, Latvia where I lived. It is the capital and a very lovely city. Ages ago I was in Copenhagen and that is also lovely but a very expensive city.

Because of climate change, weather has become more unpredictable than ever. No one really knows what to expect. I have done research on the Baltic Sea and the weather is like everywhere else, unpredictable. Re the cruise that was so horribly impacted by weather: it seems to be one of those things that does not usually happen but when it does, it is a real disaster. I really feel for the passengers on this cruise. They get no money back but they did port in St Petersburg and almost all loved St. Petersburg. I have read that Copenhagen is very expensive but I will be able to use some of my airline rewards to fly at least one way and to even use some of my rewards while in Copenhagen. I am staying at one of the Scandic hotels booked through my cruise line which is a little pricey but includes an excellent breakfast and free wi-fi plus transport to the port from the hotel. Some cruises do port in Riga and I have read that it is beautiful as well as other positive things but there is just so much time as well as money. Planning this cruise is very complicated because I have almost no experience travelling internationally.

@RasmaSandra I will do. I have been warned about the pick pockets but aren't they everywhere. I always wrap my purse around my body. If they want my purse, they will have to take me with it. My life is in my purse. I can not afford to lose it.

I have been to all of those cities except St. Petersberg. I like Tallinn, I used to work in Estonia, and I lived close to Tallinn. I visited Stockholm and Hesinki during the winter, it snowed it and was very cold, but I liked both places especially Stockholm. I didn't spend much time in Berlin, I visited some of the famous sights. I am from Denmark. I don't live in Copenhagen, but I have been there many times.
