This word is what was called men's wigs during the time of Louis XIII. Our founding fathers were in their 30's and 40's yet many had full grey heads of hair. Was it fashion or what? It seems that syphilis was raging in Europe and one of the side effects was head sores and even baldness. So many who could afford it would cover up their heads with fluffy white wigs. They quickly became a fashion statement. Waxy and full of powder they were made from horse or goat hair and smelled horribly. So they powdered with orange or lavender scented powders. Did you know George Washington wore his own? Not a wig. This was the style until late in the 18th century.

@janet357 Yikes is exactly what his missus said too when he told her why he'd bought a wig.

@celtic Now I'm going to be wondering if every bald man I meet has syphilis. My neighbour thought it was cute to call his dog Syphilis. The other one is called Haemorrhoid. Neither wears a wig.
