This is it - my last day as a paid librarian!

It began in 1976 - my career in librarianship, that is. My first job after qualification was in the Libraries Department of the British Council, based in London. I had one overseas assignment, which was to set up a library at the British Embassy in Moscow, but I left soon after that (after two years in total with the BC) for the somewhat less exciting destination of Bognor Regis! This was to be an Assistant Librarian at what would later become the University of Chichester - I stayed there for four years. This was followed by five years as the Librarian of Salisbury College of Technology, after which I went back to my old College of Librarianship (Aberystwyth) to take a Master`s Degree. I had a temporary post (9 months) with Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in Bristol, before I become the Chief Librarian of GPT - a telecoms company that later turned into Marconi. I was based in Coventry but coordinated a group of four libraries across the country. After 13 years the company got into deep trouble and I was made redundant in 2002. I have not worked full-time since then, but have had a part-time job at De Montfort University in Leicester for the past 16 years. And tonight that all comes to an end when I complete my final session as Evening Duty Officer in the Kimberlin Library of DMU. Yes - I have enjoyed my career, although it never reached the heights that I originally hoped for. I often wonder what would have happened had I been successful with some my job applications that didn't work out, but that's life, isn't it! So - just four more hours of professional librarianship to go!

Congratulations! You have done a great job! I think you will be an inspiration to all those people who were working with you. What is your plan after this?

Thanks - you're very kind. Have I done a great job? You'd have the ask the people who now have to clear up the messes I might have created along the way!

@indexer I think that we cannot please everyone. On the other hand, I believe that you got the heart of some and you will truly be missed in the workplace.

@annierose When people say they'll miss me I usually reply that I'm glad they have such a terrible aim!

It won't make a huge amount of difference in terms of spare time - my work at DMU was only one evening a week, term time only. Not having to disappear into town every Monday afternoon might give me more time for writing, however!

@marguicha I'm retiring from employment - which is not what my writing is!

Congratulations on reaching retirement. Any plans for the next segment of your life after you leave the library?

Thanks! I will still be involved with the world of libraries, because I help to run a public library in the next village that only keeps going because it is staffed by volunteers.

@indexer And I have 5 years and 4 weeks still to go. Congratulations. I trust that you’re not through with books now that they aren’t your living.

Certainly not! I am continuing with my voluntary work at my local public library, and my wife will soon tell you that my interest in books is a long way from waning! Our spare bedroom turned into my office some years ago and is now crammed with books!

Congratulations on so many years of service. Do you have any particular plans for the future? Is this retirement for you? If so, I can recommend it.

Looks like it! This job does not carry a pension, but I have been receiving pension payments from my previous employments and also get my state pension, so I am now retired on just about every front!
