Lizard Trouble

I have a bag of diatomaceous earth. It is a powder that kills crawling insects. I saw the bag open the other day. I was about to roll up the top and clip it when I had a feeling that something was not right. I opened it all the way and looked in. A lizard was trapped in there, covered with the stuff. It could not go up the plastic sides of the bag. Poor thing! I managed to use my hand to grab him and put him on the floor. He scurried away without thanking me. The earth only harms crawling insects so he will be okay. I keep thinking how horrible it would be for him if I did not have that feeling of something wrong. I am so glad he is free.

Good that you helped him escape. You should feel proud.

I did the right thing but must have had help from above. I had no way of knowing it was in there, it was just a feeling. Lizards eat bugs and I would never harm one.

I am glad that you saved him. I am sure that he was happy to get out of the bag. If I find animals in my house I try to help them. We once saw a toad in our basement. We wanted to take it the garden, but it hid in the basement. Several months later it suddenly left via the basement door. We didn't think that it would be able to survive in the basement for so long, but it did.

@akalinus It is very sad that people leave pets like that because they can't afford the vet bill. It also happens here sometimes. In that situation I would also have called someone.

@akalinus I understand. When I see animals that need help, I would like to help them all, but it is not possible. We already have four pets in our home: a dog, a guinea pig and two rabbits.

@Porcospino I did not have room to keep it or the funds to have the tumors removed. It looked pretty bad.

I don't know how he got in there but I don't think he was enjoying it much.

@Hannihar It is in a plastic bag, a big one. How did it get up the sides to fall in?

@akalinus Maybe he wandered in there by mistake and found he could not get out without help and you came along and helped him.

I always look at the fact that they are able to scurry away their thanks. Since the fire I have become more aware and cautious about life. I'm not so anxious to end a life if I can avoid it. If I find spiders in Bill's house I'll catch them and carefully put them outside where they belong, same thing with most other insects. Fortunately lizards don't wander in the house, they stay outside and since it is cold weather they have burrowed into their nests and are hibernating for the winter until it warms up again. I'm glad you had the feeling that something was wrong. Lizards are so beneficial to the environment and do a lot of good in controlling insects in our gardens and along our houses (I've seen then in the eaves of the roof). While the one you rescued didn't stop and say "Thank you" I'm sure he was relieved to be free from the bag that he got himself trapped in.

I was glad to see him scamper away. I think that is all the thanks I needed.

@akalinus I also find them in the wood piles, which is really nice. They control the black widow spiders which have a bite that can make you very ill. I don't kill black widows as they also take care of other insects that are rather hazardous to humans and their homes. It's kind of like their taking care of mosquitoes which carry blood borne illnesses to humans. I don't take down the spider webs along the house for that reason, just like I am careful about the lizards for the same reason...they also take out mosquitoes too. So, you saved yourself some mosquito bites this spring and summer by saving the lizard from the bag...you thanked him by saving him! ;-)

I don't think it was in there very long. It is only poison to crawling insects. A lizard is not an insect but I am glad I found it when I did. I don't know how long it could have lived in that powder.

@Shivram59 No, it might be comprehend, which means to understand. To apprehend is to catch something. The cop apprehended the bank robber. Comprehend is not quite right either in this case. I had a feeling that something was wrong. It is like a sixth sense or something. I just knew I had to look before clipping the bag.

@akalinus Thanks.I had used the wrong word.If "comprehend" is either not the appropriate word, could I write "He made you have the feeling that something was wrong?"

Do you know what kind of lizard he was? Here's we have Western Fence Lizards everywhere. They're kind of cute.

I think it was a gecko but can't be sure about that. He was a wiggly little critter.

It is the strangest thing, these feelings that we get.
