My nephew had his birthday this week and today we are going to celebrate. I believe he turned 11, though I could be off by a year. I asked my cousin what he likes and she told me he likes money. Who doesn't? That's what I was trying to avoid. I didn't want to give him money. I wanted to get him an actual present like games or something. But now that is out as she said no toys for him. Though toys are not games. I thought maybe getting him some clothes but everything I looked at I didn't like. So, money it will have to be. I am gonna have to put $100 in that envelope...

Well he is dressed in high end brands from what I've seen. Then it's not surprising he'd ask for money.

I am usually given that much. But if it's a birthday celebrated at a restaurant people usually give $100/person, so if it's a couple I get $200.

@marguicha i agree. 100 would be adult rate/among friends. if he starts receiving 100 at just 11 years old, wow.

Some people need money more than material things.

@lovebuglena Although I believe it is very fun to pick out a present, buy a present, wrap the present and watch someone open the present, I am kinda believing more and more that giving and receiving money is just so much better. For quite a few years now, I have been desperately trying to make it super clear to some of my family members that money is fine for a birthday or Christmas present. The reason is ( and I am speaking for myself here ) is because I am trying to get rid of things! I am honestly grateful of whatever I get but at the same time, I am trying to get rid of things. I'm getting sick of constantly getting things ( and again, I appreciate them ) I don't use a lot or at all just to have them sit there and thinking I HAVE to keep them because they were a gift from someone I love. Not all objects but a majority of objects are objects we outgrow or just don't want to have them anymore. So they sit there to collect dust. I would really rather get money to help out with any debt I'm in or just use it for something I will 100% need / want. Rather than something that is ( still thoughtful ) something I'm not going to use and just have it sit there taking up space. I understand that having a wrapped present is fun to give someone but if someone, whether it's a child or adult, has come out and literally told you what they want, then doing the complete opposite because it affects your feelings will most likely make their feelings hurt or make them feel like they weren't heard. Obviously if it was something like impossible to buy or unrealistic then that I can understand but something as simple as money in a card? Awesome. And very special for a kid to be given money!

You can always exchange the gift or return it for a store credit and get something else instead. No? A part of me thinks that stuffing money into an envelope or writing that check is not a nice thing to do. It's the easy way out. And it's not thoughtful. But at the same time getting money is better than getting a gift you hate that you will never use and will either have to throw away or re-gift to someone else... There were times when I've gotten perfume for my birthday. I don't ever use perfume, so I was stuck with something that I did not want or use. And it happened more than once. And I was bummed about that. If I am ever celebrating my birthday out I now prefer to get money because I can use that money to help pay for the birthday dinner bill.

@lovebuglena Yeah you can if you have the receipt but that's what I mean about money. Gifts are always wonderful but if someone is actually asking for money because it's what they prefer, then it's pretty clear what they want. They can then buy whatever they want or save it for something down the track. And it also saves taking it back to the store to get something else. To which might make it feel a bit awkward for the person who bought the gift and for the person who received the gift. I understand completely what you're saying because it doesn't seem like much effort sliding money in a card but if someone is actually wanting that, then they will love it. And there you go. You have got gifts that just wasn't your type so it does make it a bit hard and awkward when you don't even need it or use it.

I would ask him to put some other things on his list too. I also don’t like giving money as a gift.
