First Experience With Anxiety in 2019

I walked into a grocery chain here that I've never been in. One of the people who used to work for the grocery store I worked for? He works at this new chain now. He seems to like it.
I walked in, walked the stores and walked out. I didn't have a full on anxiety attack but I did feel rather anxious. I had the intention of potentially applying for work and talking to a manager but I just couldn't. I was too anxious, and something told me that I wouldn't like working there after all.
I walked out. Atleast I tried.

@ScribbledAdNauseum It is difficult, but I know you can do it. But you also have to take care of yourself and listen to your gut.

@tammys85 Thank you, and you are right. Unfortunately, nervousness and anxiety runs in my family. I can't think of anyone who doesn't suffer from it in one way or another.

Exactly. I do know I need to find employment this year, but I also know it will be difficult.

You have to follow intuitions sometimes.

Perhaps you need to figure out what caused your anxiety attack. Maybe you really don't want to work there. When I was applying for jobs and going to interviews I figured the reason I didn't get the jobs was because I really didn't want the job. I don't know whether I was sabotaging my interview or just not enthusiastic enough or what. I just know what I don't want to be a secretary again. But I tried. You won't know unless you try. Good luck!

I didn't actually have an anxiety attack, but there was the overwhelming sense of anxiety. I've worked for a grocery store before, this place wasn't high on my list of places to apply to. It seemed like a nice place to shop, but the thought of working there had me not feeling so well. I don't want to push myself into working anywhere like that again. I've done it before and it wasn't a good experience for me.

@ScribbledAdNauseum The bigger the company, the less likely you'll be treated well as an employee.

@patgalca The last place I worked? It was more the manager of the store, but then the manage over my department wasn't much better. He came in about four months before I quit.

Sorry to hear that, anxiety attacks are not a good feeling by any means. The fact that you tried is a very great thing. I also deal with anxiety, not to mention other mental illness-related stuff and it is hard for me to apply for jobs, but I really commend you on what you did.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Ah ok I see, sorry I must have misread.
I don't think I had known what adjustment disorder was, so I looked it up. I see, well I don't blame you at all. Sorry to hear that, I really hope things get better for you, I'm sure they will!
Thanks for saying that, but it's totally fine.

@mawdest I hadn't known what adjustment disorder was either. I've either grown away from it or have been able to better manage it as I haven't had much problems otherwise.

It was anxiety, but it wasnt' an attack. I was in control and didn't have any problems with breathing or my heart racing.
I've had anxiety and depression problems for most of my adult life. I was diagnosed with adjustment disorder at one point. I know my limitations and what I can and can't handle. If I had a choice, I wouldn't work because I'd be much happier but I have to find something that I can do and be happy with. This past year has been a financial strain on me because I haven't been working.
I'm sorry you have to deal with it as well.

I told my best friend who knows me best and trusts my instincts and she agreed with what you are saying.

@LadyDuck I am sure that instinct has served you well. I've had that happen to me several times. I was once in the home of a satanist. My best friend and I looked at one another and we said sayonara. I can't even recall that we saw anything satanic in nature, it was just a feeling we had.
About a decade later he would be arrested and the police would find several bodies buried in his yard. The house was torn down and I doubt very seriously that anything will ever be built there again.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I always trust my instinct. If I do not feel well in a place, I go away.

May try another day now that you got over the anxiety of your first visit there. You may like it there if you were hired. You never know unless you try.

@Happy2BeMe Count yourself lucky. I"m not saying all places are bad, but there's a certain level of strain for sure.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes I suppose they would be. I have never worked at a job like that.

Agreed. I would like to go back when I have more time and money to shop, but as for working there? I just don't know.

I'm sorry you got anxiety, and ended up walking away before applying. I hope it doesnt happen again, if you decide to go back and apply.

I don't think I will go back, but I am atleast going to talk to someone I know that works for that particular store.

You apply in places where you would feel more comfortable. And whenever I try,I give myself a brownie point.
That goes for everyone I guess

Yes, I think a lot of people give themselves brownie points for doing things outside of their comfort zone.

You should try again. Part of anxiety is over coming it. I've been there and done that. Don't let your anxiety control your life.

For the most part, I agree. I do try again for most things. I'm not so sure that I will try again for this place but I'm also not going to give up completely. I do plan to talk to an ex-coworker who works there. I want to talk to him again and have him tell me what it's really like to work there.
Tomorrow I am going to call the temp agency again and see if they can work with me on somethings.

The store itself was very nice, I mean the layout and everything. I do think I'll be visiting it again, but to purchase something and not to work there. The store was a Publix. They are fairly new to this area.

YEs. There is every possibilkity that a career there would be a good one, but I've worked for a grocery store before and I know my limitations.
Several people here have suggested I try again. The least I will do is contact an old co-worker who works for the company and talk to them.

@ScribbledAdNauseum We all must know and respect our limitations. Take it slow.
