The recent study has linked use of artificial sweeteners with increased risk of type II diabetes. The artificial sweeteners include saccharin, aspartame and sucralose.

I think that they are fine when used in moderation. I just made a double batch of cookies, I used regular white sugar and Splenda brown sugar. It was a nice alternative.

@Juliaacv Hmm....yes you are right, if one is not suffering from diabetes, having sugar in limited quantity may not do much harm.

@Nevena83 Yes, that's a good idea. Sugar in moderation is not that unhealthy.

You have to keep in mind that artificial sweeteners 'may' cause problems but sugars are proven to do so.

@boiboing Yes you are right, but only if sugar is consumed in excessive amount. I think if a healthy person can restrict his total sugar intake from all food sources toless than 8 teaspoons a day, it shouldn't be a problem.

I use stevia, but not a lot. Luckily I never devoloped a taste for pop so don't have a lot of need for sweeteners.

@paigea I think stevia extract is quite healthy as it is a natural extract and not some artificial chemical, if I am not mistaken.

Only real sugar for me. Or maybe honey. I hate the taste of sweeteners. Not to mention they are probably not good for you too.

Artificial sweeteners aren't good I'm aware of it.

@Icydoll Ok, that's great. But I know many young people use artificial sweeteners instead of sugar to remain slim and trim - which is a mistake. BTW, I guess it must be pretty late at night in India, it is 9:30 pm here in Africa. I must be 1:00 am in India now.
