A stupid mistake that cost me my cheque.

The sweet smell of flower blooming in the month of January could only meant one thing - time for renewal of my professional membership. As the invoice came in via email, I was ready with a cheque book in my hand. I issued a cheque of $150 dollars and was pleased with myself thinking that I was the first to make the payment. About a week later, the cheque came back to me much to my displeasure. No one should reject my cheque when I have the money there. I read the statement, Dear Cosmos, Your cheque (number XXXXXX) from account XXX-XXX-XX had been rejected for the following reason: Stale dated cheque. I took a closer look at the cheque and I nearly fainted. For the date of the cheque, I had issued it as 07/01/2018 instead of 07/01/2019. I had to issue an apology to my association and called my bank to waive the bounce cheque charges. (It was $50!!!). Despite of all the waivers, I had wasted fifty cents or a dollar on the bounced cheque. So today, I had to issue another cheque. Did a double check before I send it out again. Do you commit any silly mistakes with issuance of cheques?

We no longer have a cheque book but with each new year it's easy to put the wrong date on documents for a while.

Why do you no longer maintain one?

@id_peace We had only used it once in 12 months so it didn't seem worthwhile keeping it.

You had July as well. I've put the wrong year before but usually the banks overlook it here.

@noni1959 Oh i realised that July thing. We uses UK format so it is DD/MM/YYYY instead of MM/DD/YYYY

It is so nice of your bank. My country banks charge under this charge called Dishonored cheques.

@id_peace Some banks here might but I've never had the issue at mine. I use credit unions though. Some checks are issued with the notice it must be cashed within a certain amount of time. Those aren't supposed to be cashed but a teller may not notice it.

It's so easy to forget the new year when writing checks or signing documents. Here, the bank forgives us.

I had to look at the date on the check and then the country you are from and realize you do dates different from the US. Which looks to me like it's dated for July first instead of January seventh, which I realize it is. Banks here expect people to get the dates wrong in the first days of the year and usually put them through. At least that's what I was told when I made that mistake a few years ago.

If I am not wrong, US is MM/DD/YYYY while the UK style is DD/MM/YYYY. Since we are previous UK colony, we follow the UK date style.

Oh my! It is hard to get used to a new year. One of my shopping reports..I wrote the date as 2018 throughout..the editors corrected it for me. As I realized I had done it after it was sent off.
