How the heck is that possible?

I know someone who's published a poetry book many years ago and it keeps on selling. Not in huge numbers but still people keep buying it and years after its release. The amount of copies he's sold so far is slightly less than the total copies sold of all my books combined (which include poetry books, lyric books, books of mixed writing, a poetic tale and a novel). How the heck is that possible? He doesn't even promote his book. And I promote mine...

There must be something about his book that draws people in. Perhaps it has become a "cult classic" or something of the like? Is it geared towards a specific demographic?

@lovebuglena those are topics that people relate to on a deep emotional level. Since people who buy poetry books are often emotional people it does make sense that they would be drawn to deeply emotional topics.
It is possible also that his book has become recommended reading in a course or multiple courses or has caught on in reading groups. I know that especially if it is a low price I am much more apt to purchase books that are recommended reading for my college courses than to borrow them because I love having books and I read a lot.

@fivecandles I have his book and it is great but just wondering this... how is the book selling when it's not promoted while I can promote a book and hardly anyone gets a copy? How do people even know his book exists if he doesn't promote it?

Maybe there is something they like, and maybe he gave several copies to his friends and they further promoted his book.

I am not sure he gave any of his books away. I asked him if he knows who is buying his book but he doesn't.
