If your a fan of the history TV series "Vikings" you might be interested in some fun facts about these Norse Seafarers. Here are some beliefs about the Viking culture that are not accurate according to an article published by Discovery The Word magazine. Did you know: -They didn't drink from their enemies skulls nor did they consume their blood. Digs didn’t find any skull cups, just boring wooden and metal ones. -They’re Not Even Called Vikings. They went by the name “Ostmen” or “Astmen." The Viking term was used by historians to describe the Scandinavians who took part in overseas expeditions. -We associate Scandinavians as tall, strong and blonde haired people. This is mostly accurate but in the past, not every Viking was born blonde. There were some brunettes and redheads among them. -Other than the length of time (1 week) Viking weddings were very similar to modern ones. The couple had to bring all their friends and family from all over town as a witness. They had to plan everything accordingly, food, drinks, location and even took the weather into account. -Women Were Allowed To Divorce. Viking women could opt out of their marriage, at any time, for any reason whatsoever. The husband was even required to pay an alimony. -Before every major battle, true warriors consumed a mushroom that heightened their senses. The mushroom provided a drug induced courage to battle any foe despite their size. -Not all Vikings were bloodthirsty berserk that loved the thrills of battle. Many groups scattered in parts like Greenland and they preferred to focus on farming and well-being rather than fighting. -Vikings were concerned about hygiene and took it seriously. A Viking took regular baths either in their rivers or in special places built in their house. Archeologists have discovered tools like razors, combs and ear swabs so they were not as savage in some ways as televison might protray them. Pretty interesting wild stuff! What fun fact did you enjoy best... Back in the early 90's, I took a few of those mushrooms to heighten my senses before we went in to watch the Queensryche Operation: Livecrime concert video on a giant screen at Arnold Hall on the Air Force Academy. That was awesome!

Perhaps you have some Viking in your bloodline. You share a love of strange mushrooms, lol. Ever take one of those DNA ancestry tests. You could be related to Leif Erickson or even Thor

@dgobucks226 - No, my dad's uncle traced us back to a small village near Berlin. So small that it's not even a village anymore, rather, it's now a horse farm. My sister traced my mother's side to some place in Ireland.

@teamfreak16 Well, no shields or swords for you perhaps some lederhosen or tartan (type of Irish clothing) attire instead

I haven't seen the show. The fact I found most interesting was that they didn't call themselves Vikings and what they did call themselves.

Yes, that was something I did not know either. Here is another fact I found unusual: They started their fires with urine and fungus. This is due to the sodium nitrate found in the urine that keeps the fire at smoldering.

Me too! Wonder what will happen with Bjorn and Ivar? And Ivar's other brother? Will they overthrow him in battle? Good stuff!

Yes, very surprising! Not at all like the movies portray them.
