To automate or not to automate that is the question

I embarked on a home automation project 20 years ago using X-10 technologies to turn lights on, lights off and so on. It was interesting but required a dedicated PC for the system to operate. I didn't mind much as I had a pc that was on most of the time anyway. I've moved away from X-10 and now i find myself with a number of home automation programs. I have the Phillips Hue system for lighting in the basement. I have the Samsung Smartthings system (we have several home automation devices that connect to the Samsung smart things hub) I am really curious what other folks are doing for home automation (I have other components, just wanted to get the conversation started...

The only thing I have right now is a smart plug. I like it to a degree. I would love to have a smart fridge sometime.

No home automaton here but an interesting concept. I'm sure many others do have systems of one sort or another.

The new smart appliances are interesting, some of them actually truly shut off when they are not being used (they are not power vampires).

How old way? I remember my grandfather once telling a friend of his he got a fancy new voice-activated remote control. His friend said I didn't know they made those. My grandfather said yup they do. Then he shouted at me: come here boy and change the channel."
