This is a tale of a ghost that never was.
Back in the 1950's my dad was the manager of a grain mill at Coltishall but, from time to time, he was called upon to travel 15 miles or so to an associated mill at Aldborough. Dad had actually started his working life at Aldborough Mill as he had been born in the village and a lot of the men had told him that there was a ghost that wandered around on misty nights.
On a misty spring afternoon Dad's boss, Tom Cook, telephoned him at Coltishall and said that he wanted Dad to go to Aldborough to lock up the mill and make sure the lorries were locked up properly.
Dad arrived late that afternoon just as the last driver was parking up his lorry. They had a chat and the conversation turned to the supposed ghost. Dad was laughing about it but the driver seemed a little uncomfortable so he stopped and told the driver that he'd better get on and lock up the mill and let the driver go home.
The driver went back to his lorry just to check that he'd locked it while Dad went into the mill to check everything was in order when, suddenly, the driver burst into the reception area looking terrified. Dad asked him what had happened and the driver said that he'd seen the ghost.
Dad and the driver went back out into the lorry park and the driver pointed to a lorry and whispered that he'd seen white legs underneath it. Dad crept up to the lorry, bent down and, to his horror, saw two thin white legs and what looked like some sort of white gown.
Dad and the driver got together and sneaked round the back of the lorry, hearts pounding and on looking round discovered ...... an old man who lived close to the mill in a shack. He was standing with an air rifle in his hand, wearing a long nightshirt and his slippers. It transpired that when everyone had left the mill at night, he had a habit of getting his air rifle and going round the mill shooting rats!!

When Dad told me this story, I had this image of a wizened little man with skinny legs, mule type slippers, a nightshirt and a night cap on his head. A bit like Ebenezer Scrooge in most of the old Christmas Carol movies!!!

@olliesmum I wouldn't have thought nightshirts were common attire back then. I have much the same image.
