There is a long history on how the 'X' came to be used as a kiss to sign off on love notes. Before most knew how to read and write a person would sign legal papers with a 'X'. It also signified the cross of Christianity in the Middle Ages. The 'X' was a sign of a person's oath and they would kiss the document as well. As the use of it grew in popularity these papers signed so were said to be "sealed with a kiss".
