Why some people imagine the worst when they hear about panic attacks?

I went to another dentist. I told her that I have panic attacks. She thought the worst about me. She thought that I am not normal. She didn't have the courage to receive me. She even watched me to notice if it's something weird with me. She asked if I took my treatment. Her nurse was very surprised to see that I am normal. I wonder why some people are so ignorant. She thought that I would have to be chained. And she didn't expect me to cooperate. She told me that I am very thin. I already know this.I don't want to do general anesthesia for my teeth because of panic attacks. I hope this dentist will receive me, even if she has no idea about panic attacks. Why are people so ignorant? They imagine the worst when they hear about anxiety or panic attacks.

Sometimes I wonder if we should not tell our ailments to some people. I don´t, unless necessary. I don´t go around saying 'I´m so and so and I have cancer'. They freak out and start treating me as if I was terminal. And others run away. I tell my dental problems to the dentist, not my other problems. That I leave to tell you mylotters

I had to tell her about my panic attacks. If I would have a panic attack while she is working on my teeth she would panic more. She could call an ambulance ( and I don't need it).My therapist recommended me to tell her about these problems. I need breaks while she is working. And I need a patient dentist.

@dya80dya I prefer a dentist that does whatever I need in several days. My jaws get tired.

@marguicha Me too. I will have to go 3 times for one tooth. But I can't stay a long time at the dentist. I prefer to go often. I think it's normal, it's hard to stay for a long time at the dentist. I feel pain in my jaw and anxiety increases if it lasts too long. And the pain is huge. It was very painful, even if I had anesthesia.

Maybe they just don't know what to do. And they have already seen the worst on media and etc. That's why when they do meet it in person they will become afraid.

But panic attacks are not dangerous for other people.

Just try not to tell them what could be wrong and see if you can take it from there. In this day and age they should have more knowledge about anxiety and moments of panic.

@dya80dya I would take a chamomile tea the pure stuff if you can get it as something like Valerian might do the opposite it opens up the muscles of the tummy that cause the biggest part of the problem. Wishi it would work for you. Besides if you could find a Dentist that is compassive he or she will work with you and help you and not reject you otherwise they are not good Dentists really. Of course you would have to take the tea at least half an hour before going anywhere and try to take someone with you who you are at home with and can make you laugh and giggle.

If I don't tell them they would panic more if I have a panic attack. They would call an ambulance. And they would refuse to receive me again.

You would think she would know about panic attacks just from her medical training or just being alive! She is very ignorant. I’d see a different dentist if possible.

@DianneN It's true. She doesn't understand anything. I wanted a break. And she refused to stop.

I will try to find a different dentist. But he or she should receive me. They usually are scared of my panic attacks. This dentist seems so mean, not just ignorant.

Yes, I use to have panic attacks and still have social anxiety. I have people treat me like a freak, even though I don't appear any different than them! Yes, I'm too thin, but really don't understand why. My doctor says, I'm doing just fine!

@dya80dya Because I lost ten pounds, from stress and anxiety. I needed to get new clothes to wear!

Why do say that you are too thin?

Maybe its the first time a patient mentioned it to her, she will probably read up and react nice to you next time.

I hope she will read up. With my mother she didn't react nice. She wants to remove 3 teeth in the same day. I will not accept this.

I think the dentist should be more accepting of your panic attacks. I think generally most people are anxious when going to the dentist

It's true, but some people say that they don't have any fear at the dentist. Or panic. This makes me think that I am not normal.

Some people think about the negative first.. I feel you should try to think how to cure a problem.. Being a dentist she shouldn't be so ignorant about these general things..

Yes, she is too ignorant. And she is not young, she has experience. I don't know how to cure a problem. My therapist said that anxiety can't be cured.
