Some straight talk: So why did I reject the two year College topper

Today I had to take some interviews for a few positions. The candidates did had basic knowledge of their subject but varied in how they were able to explain things, overall communication and some other fine points (which I obviously can't reveal here).
I recommended some and did not recommend others. Among those I rejected was a person who was good at communication and was smart as well but lacked on certain finer technical aspects.
What I felt a bit bad was that he had been a college topper for two years, apart from a good football player.
Yet, later I also feel that I had to act impartial and focus on the core objectives- which could look heartless at times.
To add to it, doesn't Bhagwad Gita too tells us-do your duty, and don't think mindlessly over the fruits.
What do you say?

I have helped run interviews - you do have to make difficult decisions. You can't employ everyone you like

@arthurchappell yes though some people taking interviews do behave quite rudely or in a biased way.
