How many axes does a girl need?

We have decided to replace our old wooden shed by the house with a different sort in the corner of the garden, so yesterday (when it was dry and sunny – not like today!) I spent half the afternoon moving everything out of the old shed and into the garage for temporary storage; we want to get rid of the old shed first so we can re-use the paving slabs that are underneath it. In the course of this of I naturally rediscovered things I had forgotten about, chief among these being four axes of different sizes! Not sure I really need that many. Maybe this is a message to get out there and chop some firewood! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2019.

Zero axes are more than enough for me.

@Fleura That used to be my husband's job. Now we have a gas fireplace.

Axes were popular at one time? The person didn't like sharpening them? The axes had different purposes? They had axe parties?

Ha ha I don't know what you'd do at an axe party! One I definitely remember buying, and then one was given to me by my Dad, I think I bought the hatchet with some other tools, not sure about the 4th one!

@mynameiskate I think I'll really have to try them all properly and see which ones suit me in terms of weight and size.

@Fleura I'm not sure either what people do at axe parties. :) It is always good to have more than one tool which makes it difficult to know what to keep. Is the gifted one a keeper?

One should always have an axe or two in hand in case they need grinding. With all those tall conifers and the willow behind the shed, together with the gales forecast for the next four days, you may find you need them!

Hmm, if one of those comes down it will trash the house. And they're not ours so we can't do anything about them.

@Fleura I somehow didn't think they were yours. They look to be the other side of the hedge which i presume is your boundary.

@owlwings The huge trees belong to our neighbours. The smaller trees below are also theirs. Then somewhere in there, there is a fence. In front of that are smaller shrubs - those are ours (and they are continually growing this way to get out of the shadow of the taller trees behind (and to the south of) them. In the picture they don't look that tall, but if you can see where the overhanging branches of the smaller trees have been cut back - that is as far as we can reach with a ladder and extending loppers! We get no sun at all from Sept to March, then full sun from March to Sept!

@norcal I guess I cheated a bit too - one of the axes is a hatchet. What I really need to do is get sharpening!

@Fleura I have a hatchet, an ax and a maul. So, technically just one I guess

Maybe overkill? But I have just been given a trailer-load of logs so I need to test them out again!

@Hannihar Well I guess I should try them out, so I know which ones need sharpening.

I think only requires one axe to be held in 2 hands.

You won't need that much so long as you know how to hone and sharpen them, now go chop some wood your place is very beautiful.

Four are many. You must have been using them sometime back and not anymore.

None. Axes are for big strong boys. Don't you read fairy tales? But seriously, FOUR?? We don't own a single one. I feel cheated of an axe now.

We moved three times in a year once and didn't unpack properly at each new residence. When I did eventually unpack everything, I had multiples of quite a few things.

When we moved here and had a room lined with bookshelves, we were able to amalgamate books from around the house into one place and then we found we had two or even three or more copies of some favourites!

@Fleura Haha. I ended up with a few double-ups but not too many. I love my bookshelves and love unpacking my books when we move.
