Living on the Dark Side

Here in Norfolk UK we've had a couple of days of high wind which, has resulted in us having constant power cuts. I wouldn't mind if they were consistent but we can have it back in a flash (no pun intended) or it can take half an hour/ When I was a child, if we had power cuts it wasn't a problem. We had a coke boiler to heat our water and in an emergency it could be used as a mini hob . We had battery radios, and clocks were wound up with a key. Heating was supplied by coal fires. Washing was done in the huge kitchen sink and was squeezed through a wringer to get the water out. Now when the electricity goes off it seems that as soon as it comes back on you spend half an hour resetting clocks on your cooker, your TV recorders and your alarm clocks. You can find that your washing has stopped halfway through it's cycle and, likewise, the dishwasher. Life was so much simpler back in the 1960's.

I like the quiet when it goes off. All those things make noise that you dont think about until the noise is gone.

Last year we were informed by our electricity people that they were cutting the power in our village from 8.00 in the morning until 8.00 at night. Most of my neighbours were horrified but Adam and I got out the candles and played board games to entertain ourselves, drank tea/coffee with water heated on a little picnic stove and had baked beans on toast - beans heated on the picnic stove and toast done in front of the fire. It was wonderful!

@olliesmum I dont mind at all in the summer. If it is very cold out I do miss my heat, but have back up sources for that.

@wolfgirl569 People think we're nuts as we haven't got central heating! We heat our house with one big gas fire (log effect so it's nice and cosy).

Certainly we depend so much on electricity. For some reason, as soon as the power goes off, I think, oh, it's a good chance to do the ironing. Duh!

Have to say I'm guilty of that. When the electricity went off I thought I'd make a cuppa. Immediately reached for the electric kettle!!!
