Like most things in my life, I am eons late in reading this book. I have to admit I thought it sounded stupid and overrated, especially after the movie came out. I know, I shouldn’t be so judgey. I found the book at the thrift store for 25 cents so I figured what the heck.
I actually read this one in just a few days because it was so good and I could barely put it down! Essentially, Liz writes a memoir about her coming to terms with a nasty break up and traveling as a way to come to terms with herself, find inner peace and grow. So she spends several months in Italy where she eats. Learns the language. Then spends several months in India, where she is in a meditation group for six months and becomes centered and spiritual. And then heads to Bali, where she meets a new man, friends and has many experiences of helping others along the way.
Not nearly as corny as I would have expected and I found myself rooting for her the whole way. I loved reading about her travels, her experiences in different cultures and all the different people she meets along the way.
I have not yet seen the movie and I don’t love Julia Roberts so I may just refrain. Unless one of you can convince me otherwise.
Have you read the book or seen the movie? What are your thoughts?

I enjoyed the book, the movie not quite as much. That is typical though as far as I am concerned.

I almost always find books better than movies, so much more content

Thanks for the review cause I actually felt the same as you and didn't either watch the movie or read the book! Glad you were pleasantly surprised and you changed my attitude toward it.

I haven't seen the film; I have read the book and I enjoyed it although I liked the first part most. Where she's in Italy and can't resist saying ordinary things in Italian just because it sounds so lovely! At the end I thought things went a bit wrong because she tried to help someone and they end up seeing her as a sort of endless source of easy money.

I agree! Like normal people would not be able to do this fulfilling trip. Somehow everything worked out for her. I think I enjoyed the Italy part most too. It was fun to read about food, culture and language and felt like the most interesting part of the book.

I haven't read the book but I've seen the movie and it's the kind of movie that I'd never get tired of watching over and over again. I don't want to convince you to watch it though. It's your choice. But in my case, whenever I read a book that was turned into a film, I would usually watch the movie just to see how well they do it.

@maezee Not these types. Just this particular movie. I guess because it's not too heavy in my heart and makes me feel better. It doesn't give me any extreme emotions.

Yes, I read it a long time ago... still remember her Meditation mornings lol... and how much she hated them. Have to admit... while I do meditate every morning... not quite that early lol!

the whole story sounds terrific, that's the kind of travels I would take to forget about my past and open myself up to new people, adventures, and experiences.

Neither of the above. I just finished a great book, Educated by Tara Westover, about the struggles of a person to find herself and be contented, which believe she did, Great Read
