I was checking one of the volcano livestreams on Youtube during my lunch hour and everyone was talking about Popocatepetl (fondly known as Popo.) It erupts often, but today it outdid itself. Usually it just sends up ash, but today it was fire fountaining up to 1500-1800 meters above the crater, and it kept going for over four hours. It was very impressive, but as far as I can determine, no injuries or problems other than a lot of ash happened in Mexico. Because it was happening at night, it was very dramatic!
Watching it erupt real-time on the webcam, chatting with others about it, and seeing people from Mexico coming in to chat and talking about it, was very interesting, but not very conducive to getting work done! It was good to talk to the people from Mexico who were just a little bit worried but more excited. I think Mexico has a lot of knowledge and experience both in volcanoes and earthquakes.
Here is the video of the livestream I was watching. If you are interested in volcanoes, this channel runs several live streams and you can drop in any time to see activity at a number of active volcanoes worldwide. What do you think of this dramatic eruption? (And do you know how to pronounce this volcano's name? I had to practice!)
From 21:00 hours began the emission of incandescent fragments on the slopes of the volcano, as well as the continuous emission of volcanic gases and ash that...

So long as volcanoes don't hurt anyone, they are certainly spectacular and exciting to watch. I was kind of chewing my fingernails on this one until I found out the people around it were ok.

You are right about only a Mexican can tell you how to pronounce it, much like all those volcanoes in Iceland only being pronounceable by Icelanders and towns in Wales that only Welsh people can pronounce.

That would have been exciting to watch, even on a webcam. One myLotter has gone to Mexico for a holiday.

Right now? I have never been to Mexico but it sounds interesting, volcanoes or no volcanoes.

I have been searching for news and this eruption has not been mentioned anywhere I can find, but there was an article from Mexico News Today that said in Dec. 2018 officials have been revising evacuation routes for over 200,000 people who live near the volcano. I'm glad for that, but can you imagine trying to evacuate that many people?
