I Think It's Time to Cover Up Again

After concluding a countdown this morning a middle-aged hillbilly's heart turns to the next countdown. This time, it's back to the covers! This will be the fifth volume of "songs you may not have known were covers." I'm going to balance that list with a list of songs you probably did know were covers. Most people, for instance, know that Joe Cocker's "With a Little Help From My Friends" is a cover of the Beatles' song (performed by "the one and only Billy Shears" [a/k/a Ringo] on Sgt. Pepper), but did you know that the hideous, disgusting, awful song "Achy Breaky Heart" by Billy Ray Cyrus was also a cover? Yep. It was originally recorded by a group called the Marcy Brothers, which I can only describe (other than with fart noises) as an attempt to give country music a teenybopper act like the DeFranco Family. Their version of A.B.H. failed miserably. It should have stayed that way. So it's off to cover land again. I hope you enjoy the trip. Here is one of the funniest things I've ever seen on You Tube: a video of Joe Cocker singing "With a Little Help From My Friends" with "closed-captioning." Once you read the captions (and see the accompanying photos) you'll almost swear that is what he was singing! Enjoy!
