Along with the fifth installment of songs you might not have known were covers I'm looking at ten songs that most people DO know were covers. For today's cover song I'm taking a blast from the past that keeps blasting its way back into the charts. Here it is.
#6: The Loco-Motion
In 1988 Kylie Minogue released "The Loco-Motion" and had the song go to the top five on the Billboard charts. And, as it wasn't that far removed from the original, most people knew it was a cover.
Well, maybe some rockers thought it was a cover of a Grand Funk Railroad song.
In 1974 Grand Funk's version hit #1 on the charts. But even then many people knew it was a cover.
In 1962 Dee Dee Sharp turned town the King/Goffin-penned song, probably to her eternal chagrin. That was fine for Little Eva (nee Eva Boyd), who jumped on the song. It was Little Eva's first hit, and that original version, too, went to #1.
There aren't many songs that have accomplished the feat of having two different versions (Picky Wedia says there have been nine songs to do so) hit #1. Thanks to Little Eva and Grand Funk, "The Loco-Motion" is one of them. Had the Minogue version made it to #1, it would have been historic.
The Loco-Motion
Written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin
Originally recorded by Little Eva, 1962
Famously covered by Grand Funk Railroad, 1974
Famously covered by Kylie Minogue, 1988
