"Do YOU practice SYMPATHY or EMPATHY in YOUR Life?"

When I was still working in the hospital as a Licensed Physical Therapist, I practiced being an empathic person. It was being taught during my university days that people who are in the medical field should not show sympathy to their patients. For the reason that it will affect their profession as doctors, nurse, etc. Honestly, I am a kind-hearted person. Sometimes I can't conceal my feelings and drawn to be sympathetic to my patients at that time. When I was assigned in convalescent stage patients, I felt bad seeing patients who are dying. I can't do anything but not to give false hope to them. What more if I am dealing with my family. I chose not to treat my own blood clan. For the reason that I feel not that good in healing their ailments. It is a fact that most medical practitioners don't prefer to treat their family. "How about you my fellow myLotters?" "Are you sympathetic or empathetic?" Image Credit: pixfeeds.com

i think treating your own family can be hard and frustrating. on the other hand, they also say those in the medical field are the most stubborn patients.

You said it right. Some medical practitioners are doing factors that affect their health. It is really frustrating if dealing with the family's health condition.

I can be like this character, too. If I am facing a person has pachyderm, I will not feel anything.

I am empathic with closed people, not everybody. On the other hand, I can be sympathetic with people who I barely know.

You have a point here. We can be flexible in our feelings towards others. It still signifies that we are still humans to express one's feelings, either being empathic or sympathetic.

I do whatever needs to be done for each person I encounter. Each situation is unique so my feelings and actions will be different too.

I agree. That's what flexibility comes in. I do think that people need to know the differences between being empathetic and sympathetic. It can be misjudged by some people who can't understand them.

Its hard being on the medical field and not practice such. I think if i were you i would also choose not to treat family members for the same reason

It is really difficult to deal with a family's health condition. For not serious ones, I can deal with them. If not, I prefer that my colleagues can do them for me.

I do think that we need to consider things before showing our empathy or sympathy.

@Shavkat I try to be both. A person that understands or can relate is a person that cares.

@Hannihar Unfortunately, psychopaths can do this. They are good actors. Thus, we need to be careful with these people.
