Happy Saturday! Here we’re “enjoying” a break from the rain, waiting for more rain in the afternoon. Before I float away I’ll give you another song from the world of hits that were covers, and in this case you probably knew this one was a cover.
#4: I Shot the Sheriff - Eric Clapton
Clapton. Marley. See you tomorrow.
Okay, a little more than that.
Reggae’s first “hit” in the US was Desmond Dekker and the Aces’ “The Israelites” in 1969. But Eric Clapton’s cover of Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff” is probably the best-known reggae hit. Marley’s story of a man shooting a dishonest cop in self-defense was covered by Clapton and became Clapton’s first #1 single in the US.
A classic song that links two legends.
I Shot the Sheriff
Written by Bob Marley
Originally recorded by Bob Marley & the Wailers, 1973
Famously covered by Eric Clapton, 1974

I knew about Eric covering Marley's song but not that it was his first #1 hit, interesting! And thank goodness there was no harm to the deputy in either song version

No, the deputy was killed (“they say they want to bring me in guilty for the killing of a deputy”). “I” just didn’t do it.

I don't like reggae music, but this is a good one.
