Favorite "City" Songs #1 - "Suffragette City"

Hey man! I have been counting down my favorite songs with "Town," "City," "State," and "Country" in the title, and this is the "City" edition of today's discussion. We have reached #1: "Suffragette City" by David Bowie. You might know "Suffragette City" as the "Wham, bam, thank you, Ma'am" glam rocker from David Bowie's classic 1972 album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. However, before Bowie recorded it, he offered the tune to his buddies in Mott the Hoople, in hopes that it would keep that band from breaking up (the Mott's declined, instead choosing to record Bowie's song "All the Young Dudes.) "Suffragette City" was finally released as a single after being included on Bowie's 1976 singles compilation, Changesonebowie. And while the song failed to chart, it remains a fun, vital piece of classic rock (still heard regularly on Classic Rock Radio, which, considering that Bowie had about a gazillion hit songs to choose from, shows just how good it is.) If you are interested, Frankie Goes to Hollywood did a pretty cool cover of the song (I once had it as the B-Side of their "Rage Hard" 12-inch single,) which was kind of a no-brainer considering that it's pretty much right in vocalist Holly Johnson's wheelhouse. Basically, it's a classic tune that also happens to be a blast! One of David Bowie's finest moments, out of a career full of them. (Info verified by Wikipedia)

@teamfreak16 I know I am lacking some of his later stuff, but I am very much a child of the 70s, so I am sure I have his best!

Mott the Hoople didn't do too bad with All the Young Dudes.

Good song! A favorite of DJ's in some of the bars I use to frequent. The Ziggy Stardust persona was a major influence on glam rock bands like T-Rex and Suede.
