Scamming for Tax Refund

Since the start of February, phone calls have been coming in from various people claiming to be from the local power company, the local fire department, local cable company, local phone company, local this and that, well you get the picture.
They all want to speak to the head of the household to inform them that the bill is not current, but if you tell them your card payment information over the phone they'll be more than happy to resolve it for you. Well, my mother caught on right away, but my dad, nope. He'd get frustrated and worried about the supposed missed payments and possible unowed debt.
There is also the calls asking if there is any interest in donating to the firemans fund or police officers organization. It's very simple to support these community efforts by just simply supplying them with your credit card information over the phone.
I kept telling my dad to not talk to any of them and to just hang up, it took a while, but he finally conceded and just lets the answering machine pick up the call. As you'd expect, no one leaves a message, only the pharmacy does.
It's a messed up thing these scammers are trying to do by trying to thieve money over the phone. Obviously they know a lot of people are getting their tax money and are hoping to con it out of them.
I'm just glad my dad doesn't do e-mail.

There are so many scams. Not just the phone calls but also mail, e-mails.
I avoid them all!

I have been getting a crap ton more spam mail or scam mail. I did not even think about tax season. Well at least we know our broke system is still alive and well.

Over here we have the TPS {telephone preference service}. If you sign up for it {it's free, which rather begs the question as to why it isn't just standard}, it stops companies cold calling you. I mean, it actually makes it illegal for them to call. This only works for UK based call centres, but it works! Do you have something similar in the US?
