Ten Kentucky Tourist Places: Kentucky Bourbon Trail (#6)

It's time to present another great thing about Kentucky. I'm counting down tourist attractions in the state, similar to what I did last year with Louisville. These aren't centered in Louisville, although some of them are close. And, for today's attraction, I may be "cheating" a little. #6: Kentucky Bourbon Trail No free samples of gold, Corvettes, or horses were available, but guess what!!!! Many of the stops on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail do offer free samples!!!! When I began this countdown I mentioned there are things that are singularly unique to Kentucky. This is one of them. Bourbon is made nowhere else in the world. Now, I don't drink, so I don't know what separates "bourbon" from "whiskey" from "scotch." I just know that we are proud of our second most popular liquor (behind moonshine: 87 of the 120 counties in Kentucky are either completely "dry" [meaning no alcohol sales at all] or "moist" [with restrictions, usually to beer and wine]). The Kentucky Bourbon Trail isn't one place, which is what makes it "cheating" a little. It's spread out from Louisville to Bardstown to Clermont to Lexington to Lawrenceburg...and even goes as far west as Owensboro, if you're up for the drive (and you can reward yourself with Moonlight Barbecue while you're there!). It encompasses tours of the distilleries that make Maker's Mark (Loretto), Four Roses, Wild Turkey (both in Lawrenceburg), Jim Beam (Clermont), Bulleit, Rabbit Hole (both in Louisville), Heaven Hill (Bardstown), and others. Of course, you don't have to go to all of them. You can be intoxicated by one! Each distillery has its own price for tours. Most offer samples after the tour for individuals 21 and over. Additionally, there are bus tours that take individuals to various distilleries if you don't want to drive the trail yourself. But why wouldn't you? The Kentucky Bourbon Trail winds its way through some of the most beautiful landscape in the state! I toured Maker's Mark many years ago (and Jack Daniels...but that's in Tennessee).

I love the Maker's Mark property. Absolutely gorgeous down there. And Jack Daniel's is distilled in a dry county in Tennessee. Go figure.

The story is that bourbon was first produced in Bourbon County, so named for the French monarchs who sent missionaries to settle the area (The Bourbon Family). The first year it was produced used barrels were burned out to cleanse them, thus producing the amber colored liquid. When it was sent to market in New Orleans it was immediately very popular and customers were asking for that "Bourbon" drink. I heard this story on the Bourbon Trail. It may or may not be true.

That's the trouble with touring wineries down our way. Eventually you all end up too tipsy to drive.
