Doing Things Another Way

I just found it obnoxiously funny with the recent challenge in Thailand where a durian tycoon actually posted out an ad for eligible bachelors to come forward and undergo a test to win the hand of his daughter. Of course, the winner will be handsomely rewarded including a cash reward of 10 million Thai Bahts and the whole estate after his demise. I just could not help wondering how audacious this has been for this to happen in a rather conservative Thai culture with an attractive daughter. As a father, had he no due consideration for himself or his beautiful daughter? How reckless can one get here? Further reading:
Thai durian tycoon Anon Rodthong has put an end to his, and his daughter's rather thorny matter. Anon said on Wednesday (Mar 6) that he was cancelling the tournament he had announced earlier in the week to help sift out 'the one' from 10,000 potential suit

Well, that's exactly the second question that came to mind as I read this and its developments.

That's rather insensitive of him when he should be protecting his daughter than himself.

Nice to see you ! The tycoon is too big for his boots !Granted,he has money to burn, but he shouldn't entrust his daughter's marriage and lifelong happiness to a tournament.

Precisely. With the world today, one can never know how or what another person really is. I felt that the tycoon is really reckless with his daughter's future. Anyway it is nice to see you too. Thank you for your participation here.

would he do that if he had a son? probably not. how can he be sure the "winner" will not leave or cheat on his daughter/future grandkids, or squander his estate - or both?

Now, I don't even know if the man her daughter chooses will be after his daughter or his estate genuinely speaking.

This sounds as coming out from many centuries ago. I think that the only one who can decide who she wants to marry is his daughter.

I agree with you. As a parent, we all want the best for our children but we need to recognize that there are some matters where we should not be the final say and this is just one of it. It is such times that as a parent we must really release our grips and observe at the side.

@artemeis I can imagine that it's hard if a parent dislike the one who has to become a son in law or daughter in law, but stopping the marriage is not always the best solution.

wow. He should have thought things through because the winner might be a bad guy who just wants the money.

We might never know, do we? Now her daughter is a target for the scammers and grafters.
