Re-discovering my little town

Hi mylotters,
It has been a low key weekend and that is alright! I spent yesterday sort of re-discovering my little town.
This town is in the middle of farming communities and is approx. 3,000 population. We are located 15 miles out of a much larger town, so if something isn't available here - it's just a hop, skip and jump into "town".
Even though there aren't many people here this little town has a lot to offer.
We have hardware stores, grocery, 2 general stores, a bar, library, gym, couple fast food places, Chinese restaurant, pizza place, café and even a movie theater.
Yesterday I got the chance to go into a couple buildings I haven't been in before.
This weekend this small town's churches have fundraiser garage sales.
I went to the Catholic's school's annual fundraiser garage sale. The past couple of years I have gotten some great stuff cheap. This year I got skunked though.
I went to the Lutheran Church's sale. I walk by the building each time I go to my garden - but I hadn't been in it before. Always wondered what it was like inside - since it's a very angular architecture on the outside. Inside it's beautiful with large windows and an open foyer.
Then, I finally went to the youth center building, because another Church was having their sale at that location. I walk past this a lot, too. Once I got in there - I realized this space back, 20 years ago - had been a restaurant my parents and I had stopped at before any of us lived in the area. It was a fantastic place and I have to say - even though I have nothing against youth programs - I was sorry that the space wasn't still a restaurant or something of community interest rather than just a place for kids.
For noon meal, I treated myself to the little café. When I said little, I meant, really, really little.... next to the drugstore is what might be the world's smallest dine in restaurant. It has 4 tables. It could maybe seat 20 in the dining area. That said it has fantastic and cheap pizza, chicken, burgers, - but I normally get the tacos which are fantastic and, well cheap. I think they do a lot of carry out business.
It's a pleasant enough place. But the kitchen takes up 2/3rd the amount of space and there aren't even any restrooms in the building.
I wondered why they didn't rip the kitchen out - and the youth group could move over there. Leaving the nice huge restaurant, for , well, a restaurant.
On all accounts it was a nice if not slow day rediscovering some of this small town's buildings.

I would love to have grown up somewhere like that. In fact it sounds like the sort of place I wouldn't mind retiring to.
Maybe that's because I grew up in the urban sprawl of a reasonably sized city. We always want what we didn't have!!

I have really enjoyed it here, since I moved here a few years back. It seems close to ideal situation. Rural enough to be quiet , low crime, easy to get to the countryside.... though big enough to have more than the basics.
I hope you get the chance to experience something similar, see if it's a good fit .
When I was younger I would have that urban sprawl sounded great :-D

@FayeHazel A couple of years ago we moved to a suburb of Manchester which has a nice village feel to it. It's right on the edge of the suburban sprawl and we can walk from our house into the hills in a few minutes.
We might stay here!

@WorDazza Oh that sounds really ideal. Manchester is a larger city, right? Oh that's cool. Plenty close to the calm of nature, but near enough a more populated area to have access to shopping, entertainment....

Your town has a lot to offer for a small town. This area is a bit more spread out..some of the restaurants have bars,,but no stand alone..well maybe one in the county seat. It would be fantabulous if there was a theater and a Dollar Tree. There is a good library, rec center, and museum. There is also an Arts Center.

@FayeHazel Yes, it isn't really my town per se, but the county seat near here.

It really is pretty good here. I joke - all we need is a Mexican restaurant. Though the Rec Center , Arts center and museum must be nice in your town :-)

That's cool that due to going to all those sales you got to check out the inside of so many places in your town. Your town sounds similar in size to the town next to mine which is a mile away. Except there is more to do in your town. The actual town I live in has around 300 people.

@FayeHazel a garage to repair cars, an autobody shop to fix cars after crashes, a church , a community center\police station and a school.

It's nice to do some exploring. I have not had a chance to get to the other side of the river here and I am looking forward to doing that in the near future.

It's always interesting rediscovering where you live. I'm glad you had fun in your adventure.
If kids don't have a place to go, they'll get in trouble. That's what my small town realized before they turned the unused space in the church into a youth center. Problem solved.

@FayeHazel A downtown location is centralized and easy to find. If people need to seek it out, they won't bother with it. I know I wouldn't.

It can be very rewarding, like you say. :-)
Good point, it just makes me sad when stuff like that (youth center, various offices, storage, food shelves, ) are in downtown buildings. Not that I have anything against any of those things - in fact they're quite needed and useful, I just think that those are the types of things that people who have an interest it - will go and seek out - don't need a downtown location in order to thrive.
But then, maybe it's not so much that - but the fact that a lot of downtown areas are not thriving in favor of strip malls, fast food, etc - that is bothering me.
I'm happy the kids have a place to go/something to do. I know when I was a kid I used to go to Christian Youth group - it was nice but awkward because I was on the cusp of too old … and the roller rink... :-D

@just4him Hm. Interesting. I suppose it does drive more traffic to it - announce it's presence better.
Though - and I'm only thinking of those type places in my town, maybe in other towns it is different - I don't like seeing places that are usually closed taking up downtown space... (a lot of nice storefronts/former restaurants here are being used as storage, offices, the Youth center) are only actually open a day or 2 out of the week. (I left out the food shelf, because I think it's open more of the time)
And I think that goes into my dislike of big businesses taking over smaller businesses and downtowns more than anything...
Sorry long rant.... and I admit - I do my share of shopping at the big chains too. ....

@FayeHazel I hear ya about the name of the Senior Center. It really should have a cooler name. lol
The trails are very nice unless you see a snake slither out of the woods in front of you. I've let out some piercing screams, then got in my car and drove home and refused to return for weeks.

@DianneN Hm. I wonder what else they could call a Sr. center. "Enrichments: a community group for adults"... hm. Not exactly. Something like that though maybe.
Ah. I don't blame you. That's my reaction to bats.

Thanks, it was a surprisingly nice day.
Your little town sounds nice. I think a Sr. center is a great idea , I wish my parents would go to something like it, but I think it needs to be named different for my dad to think it "cool" enough for him.
I bet those trails are nice.

Oh yes, we're pretty small here. There are a lot more businesses downtown, though sadly some aren't being used / used as storage or offices, a couple of meat markets, etc.
