A Review of Sorts

A year or so ago (April 17, 2018, according to my order history) I discovered that the website Craftsy (now Bluprint) had some free classes among the various purchasable (is that even a word?) classes on their website.
Being able to watch a video and follow along with a project is a learning method that works well for me so I jumped on the 2013 Block of the Month project thinking that it would be a great way to learn some new techniques and improve my current skills.
I diligently worked on the various assignments for a couple of months but then life got busy and I wasn’t entirely thrilled with the work that I had completed so the project was set aside for the time being.
A month or so ago, rather than start I new project, I convinced myself to resume the only line classes and complete the project.
The instruction provided was presented in an engaging format and I was able to follow the assignments with only minimal difficulties. I’m not entirely convinced that all of the provided measurements were accurate since a few of my blocks had to be cut down by nearly an inch on each side to meet the final measurements and one block ended up being a full inch too small (maybe I just don’t measure very well).
Overall it was a good class. I learned some new techniques that I will probably use on future projects. I may even refer back to parts of the video to remind myself of exactly how to do certain things.
However, there are some things I didn’t like.
First: each finished block was a different size so changing the final layout was impractical. (Quilting sometimes requires far more math than I want to use).
Second: I really don’t like the layout. (And changing the layout would have required math. Have I mentioned that I avoid math?)
The photo shows the finished quilt top and while I love the colours I do not particularly like the layout.
I also made a fairly silly mistake. The “tumbling blocks” block in the top left corner is upside down. But we can pretend that was an artistic choice.

Thanks. I DO like the colours and I am proud of myself for actually getting the "flimsy" finished. The next step is to get the backing and the batting and get it ready to quilt.

@SophiaMorros It's not quilted yet? What do you need to do to finish it?

Thank you! I did invest a lot of time into making the block. The basket of flowers involved a significant amount of hand sewing.
Now I just have to get it quilted...

@just4him It's just the "flimsy" the top pieced and appliqued layer of the quilt. Next, it needs a layer of batting and layer of backing fabric and the actually quilting stitches. The final step will be binding to enclose the edges.

You could have fooled me about that tumbling blocks. Looks good to me, I love the colors and that is what I notice and your squares are lovely. I am an artist and i do not sew. My sister does quilts and every one of them has awed me. You are an artist with fabric.

I love the colours! The artist/designer in me isn't happy with the layout. My daughter mentioned that it almost looks like a swastika and now that I've noticed that I can't unsee it.

@PainsOnSlate I didn't see it until she pointed it out. She's my resident art consultant and knows I want her to be honest with me.

The tumbling blocks are supposed to look like blocks. the green is supposed to be the top of the blocks not the bottom.

The upside down tumbling blocks aren't really a big deal. They don't bother me enough to take it out and flip it over. I really wish there was a white strip running down the middle to separate those two smaller blocks on the left from the ones on the right. Unfortunately, that is more work than I really want to tackle.

The math involved in quilting engages the brain. While math isn't necessarily my strong suit....and I might do every calculation the most difficult way possible....I've learned to adjust and make everything fit (most of the time!)

@SophiaMorros I'd agree with you on that. That's our OCD showing.

If all of the larger blocks had been the same size the math wouldn't have been nearly as intimidating. But no two of the blocks were the same size. I really think those two smaller blocks along the left of the center line should have been separated by a band of white from the blocks on the other side.
