I feel we all suffer from some degree of depression at some stage of our life. Severe depression is certainly a major disorder that needs to be treated by professionals. There are antidepressant medications available, known as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) and Tricyclic Antidepressants such as amitriptyline, sertaline, etc which are used for treating depression. Other common methods used in depression treatment include cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, and psychodynamic therapy. Which one would you prefer - antidepressant medications or behavioral therapy?

Both would probably be helpful. Learning the triggers to having depression might help the patient steer clear of those triggers. While many depression meds work for many some actually cause the patient to be even more depressed and if not monitored closely some have even taken their life after getting on some type of medication.

antidepressants certainly are easier but my practitioner suggests a combination of both.

I actually do not know since I did not experience major depression yet. I think if someone is depress it is important that the person can talk to someone about it.

When it is severe I'd suggest medication but making it a habit might be harmful in the long run. Behavioral therapy must be continued. I also advice spiritual healing. I have seen more than one persons healed in Christian Prayer Centres (Ashrams) such as Divine Retreat Centre in Potta, Kerala.
