Two days ago, when I went to my brother´s house for dinner, my SIL told me that she was very much worried about what to do with a sort of scarf made with 2 otters´ furs that my mother had given her before dying. They were probably 30 years old and my father had given to her when they were used. She would not use them and she did not want to throw them away out of respect for the memory of my mother. I told her that there was nothing to do with my mother but asked me to show them to me. The little furs were 2 otters, each with their heads and feet. Of course, you cannot go out as someone will stone you. Bu I told her that she could use them in winter when she was home either at her laptop or reading. They were very soft and warm. She was shocked by my words and asked me if I wanted them. I said yes. The poor otters have been dead for decades. Even if they had died of a natural death, they would be dead by now. And I have no means to bring them back to life, so the only thing I can do is to sort of recycle them. I´ll use them as scarf in winter and I will not be as cold. What do you think about this?

It is what it is. I for one am not totally a fan of making things from animals. But we do EAT animals, and we have to kill them before we eat them, and use a lot of the parts for a lot of things. It's the WEARING of animals that did not come from food consumption purposes that bothers me a little bit. At least when I eat a burger I am assured a little bit that is part of the natural order of things. Humans are omnivores. That means along with plants, we are supposed to eat animals. I am not sure if wearing animals falls under that category of 'reasonable' or 'natural.'

But I think that many shoes and belts are made from animal skins. And if an animal is destroying the planet, maybe we should keep their number checked. I saw another plague of animals at the Iguazu falls. Those animals were partly eaten by pumas. But then, men killed most of the pumas and the population of the smaller animals grew.

@porwest The beavers that are destroying our native forest started with a stupidity of men. They brought the beaver (not native from here) to raise it for fur. The animals got loose and the people did not mind much. And they started to reproduce themselves and to create dams by cutting trees that take over 1000 years (thousand) to grow. I´d kill part of them, use their furs and maybe make dog food from their meat if they cannot be eaten by men. The beavers did not get here by natural means.

@marguicha Well, first of all, I don't think animals are destroying the planet. But that's a political argument so I will just leave it at that. Most of our shoes and belts are made from animal BYPRODUCTS. In other words, leather is from cows for example. We eat the cow and we use their skins and bones and other parts to make products from. But the initial reason we killed the cow was for food. We are just making use of the other parts of the cow that we can use for other purposes. We are not killing the cow just for shoes and belts. We are killing the cow primarily for food.

@theend The scarf even has the 2 otter faces, feet and legs. Do you know how it would look to go out in such an attire? People could throw you stones and spit you.

Makes sense. You're not buying fur now, and throwing the fur away will mean you might have to buy something else to jeep you warm.

Yes. I told my SIL that I would use it and brought it home.

I wouldn't wear them in public but definitely as an inside layer when relaxing as you suggest.

It's true. I don't wear my fur coats anymore except when walking Doodles the cat in the yard.

I now wish that some of the beavers that are destroying the forests in the south of my country were put to a better use.

@DianneN There are too many, their furs are beautiful and I bet that even their meat can be used in some way. It is not that I want then exterminated. But I don´t want them to exterminate the native forests.

What you state is truth. Those otters were from long ago before the "new rules."

There are many animals that should be kept in their right numbers.
