Mt. Etna, Sicily

On a Mediterranean cruise a few years ago, one of our stops was Sicily, the 'football' shaped island, west of the the 'toe' of Italy. On one of our shore excursions in Sicily, we went up to a lower level of Mt. Etna far below its peak, but far enough up that the air was much cooler than it had been at sea level, in the dusty remains of former eruptions, with very little vegetation. Always off in the distance we could see a plume of volcanic smoke from Etna's peak, showing that the mountain is still an active volcano.

The ship's captain told us to look into the night sky at about 11:00 at night to see an erupting volcano, which we did, far away but spectacular

@JWMILLER I've visited the northern part of Italy. I hope to see Sicily one day. As for the volcanic islands, I think I would put on the first place - Santorini (Greek Island) Did you visit that island perhaps?
The island is beautiful and I can say that it's one of my life's wishes to fulfill, for years I've been dreaming about that island

It was wonderful, with lots of other places on our cruise.

We also saw a distant erupting volcano at night.

. I don't think this will happen soon, but who knows? Italy is not that far from Romania.
