Whatever Works

Over the Christmas holidays, my mechanical-engineering student son bought himself an inexpensive (relatively) 3-D printer. In the months since then, he has created some rather intriguing bits of plastic.
A couple of weeks ago I noticed he had made a smart-phone clamp for his phone that he could wedge into one of the dashboard air vents. Anyone who has tried to navigate using the GPS on their phone without having either a passenger to hold it or a convenient and stable place to set it in the car can probably appreciate my eagerness for him to make one for me as well.
A few days later he presented me with the white clamp that you see in the photo. He hadn’t been pleased with the original mechanism for mounting the clamp in an air vent and told me he would finish it when he had a solution.
Yesterday I needed to use the GPS to pick up a family member at an unfamiliar address and I decided to take matters into my own hands.
I found a binder clip that would be strong enough to hold the weight of the phone and the clamp and then went off in search of something to attach the clamp to the clip. It is difficult to see in the photo but the solution to my problem was a large safety pin.
It’s not a pretty solution. The phone ends up hanging at a bit of an angle. But, it DID solve my problem
This afternoon my mechanical-engineering student son is using my car. I’m really curious about what he’ll have to say about my solution.

@SophiaMorros Sometimes the only way you can keep things for yourself is to tell others there isn't any! I guess I'm thinking more of chocolate!

@JudyEv that was the single binder clip that I knew was in the house and at the time he was looking fie binder clips I had no idea where it was.
I stopped buying traditional paper clips years ago because that particular son is a fidgeter and would straighten out any one he got his hands on. (We also had to resort to pens that couldn't be easily disassembled).

He was impressed that I had worked something out. He also complained: "Didn't you tell me last week that we didn't have any binder clips?"

@SophiaMorros My nephew is heavily involved with a 3D company that makes medical things. It is amazing! However, he only invested in it and never made a thing himself. lol
I wish your son luck. It will be a big seller!

The challenge for him is coming up with mounting "hardware" that can be constructed entirely of plastic. My binder clip and safety pin are both made out of metal.

He comes by tinkering honestly. My husband and his brother both work in industrial maintenance as do a couple of people on my side of the family.
I imagine some of it is coming from a long line of people who learned early in life to "make do or do without"

@SophiaMorros No, I remember that you told me what your husband did, and between his knowledge and your innovative and talent at quilting and sewing, I am sure that your son has the make it or fix it gene. He's lucky, not all of us have that trait.

My son borrowed my car this afternoon. When he came back he reminded me that he is still working on a permanent solution.
