I am watching youtube. The Worst Jobs in History: Victorians (Victorians Documentary I Timeline to be exact. This is the second episode I've watched, the first I believe was about The Tudor workforce.
I'm sure the majority of you have heard about the boys that had to climb up chimneys to clean them out. That's covered in this one. They also cover those who go around collecting from the dustbin (Actual soot and ash from chimney's, stoves etc), those who collect old chicken bones, those who had to work in a workhouse.. The list goes on.
The presenter has had to catch a rat by his bare hand, climb into a locomotive and shovel the coal, tear apart rope, break up stone... I think the easiest he's done so far is to call "Herring!" Though that would have been boring after awhile, looking out to sea and waiting for the birds to fly overhead.
What have you been watching lately?

I've been re-watching Firefly with my girls since our resident house-elf hadn't actually seen it before.

@SophiaMorros I think I might have seen parts of one or two episodes. I was more a fan of Buffy than anything else. Firefly came before, didn't it? OR was it after, I can't recall.

I've not seen it either. Is that the one that Joss Whedon created? Or am I thinking of something else?

@ScribbledAdNauseum that's the one. I didn't really pay attention to the first couple of episodes when the kids first watched it but I was sucked in by the end of episode 3. The dialog and character development is fantastic.

I have The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes but I also have some books writeen by fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. One covers Mycroft, Sherlock's brother. Another is about Dr. Watson and his own detecive work. It's more interactive.

@Sojourn Have you watched any of the shows based on Sherlock? Or do you stick to the literature?

The Victorian Era is one of my favorites. You've heard of "This Victorian Life" couple from Seattle? There's a website that they've made, they are like a living museum, except they don't allow entry into their home. It's more a matter of them preserving life as it was in VIctorian times.

@celticeagle Oh I definitely love Victorian style houses but not the Victorian style paint. I once watched a documentary about a Victorian Pharmacy. I might have to watch it again, it was really informative.

And sadly, a lot of Victorian style jobs still exist in parts of the world today. Panning in the sewer? No, thank you!
My ancestors had jobs like Farmer, Stained Glass Artist, Fishmonger, Jeweller, School Master, Blacksmith and Hackney Carriage Driver. I suppose they were quite good jobs for the time.

Farmer, Moonshiner (though I wouldn't consider that a job per se, but a hobby), Preacher, Logger....
I think people just made due with what they could. A Hackney Carriage Driver might have been well paid. Jeweler most likely as well but I imagine it was a big strain to the eyes and hands. Blacksmith's were in high demand as well.

Yes, so many tough jobs that we don't like to think about.

@Sheali Yes there are some jobs that were started many many years ago and are still done today. I saw a job of cleaning a sheep's behind. I am sure it's still done today.

After watching the Victorian Doc, I watched one on the Dark Ages. There was one where they had to handle poo as t was used as the molding in the walls. However, there was one worse then that. They had to go with rope and bucket over the cliff face to gather eggs from wild birds.

Despite Pokemon being very much my generation, I never did watch it or get into any of the trading games either. I hope you enjoy watching it.
