Lyle Tuttle "Father of Modern Tattooing," died yesterday at the age of 87

He has been tattooing since he was 18 and he tattooed many celebrities. One of them was Janis Joplin. Joplin was known for being the first celebrity with a visible tattoo. She claimed that the symbol stood for the liberation of women. Tuttle agreed with her and he credits women's liberation with the resurgence of tattooing. It opened up the market to half of the population. He says women made tattooing a softer, kinder art form.
The tattoo legend worked with artists like Janis Joplin and Paul Stanley.

I'm not a big fan of tattoos. Not sure why. I don't mind piercings. Sorry to hear he has passed on.

I'm not either, I don't have any, but I know a lot of people who do. It was interesting to read about how attitudes toward tattooing changed, and it sounds like he was a big part of that.
