March is Colo-Rectal cancer awareness month

I usually don't post 2 discussions in a day, but while it is still March I wanted to make sure I do my usual March public service announcement about colo-rectal cancer awareness. My mom is a survivor of this wicked illness - and she said I have her permission to tell her story to anyone I think this may help. Because that's my mom. She's awesome like this. -- Because of this illness she has had to have 3 large surgeries, 2 "bags", many scars, a round of chemo, countless tests, images, therapies and appointments. I am very thankful she is healing and thriving but it has been a lot of things that (likely) would not have been needed if she had gone in promptly for her colonoscopy. While the test is nothing that people would like to do- it is preferable to all of the havoc of having the ailment. Please do get your colonoscopy as recommended by your physicians and health care professionals. Photo: Pixabay

I'm glad she's a survivor. Yes, it is preferable to having cancer. The prep for it is wicked.

@FayeHazel @just4him Vince didn't find it too bad really. He must have been one of the lucky ones.

@JudyEv Oh good! Mom says if you watch your diet beforehand the prep is a bit better.... on all account happy that Vince doesn't have a bad time with it

@FayeHazel Faye, I understand what you are saying but a colonoscopy and virtual colonoscopy are very very hard to do.

@Hannihar I don't blame you.... they don't sound fun. Everything I have heard is that the prep done the night before is the worst part. Some people are able to do a different test where they send in a sample, gross as it is - sounds easier than the test

Perhaps so for certain of people with certain of conditions - however here they are considered fairly routine screening (at least the regular conoloscopy)

Your mother is a survivor. My uncle wasn't. I do have colonoscopies regularly.

Ah yes. I'm not looking forward to it, but it will be a good idea given family history. Mom and I will do ours together. Thanks! She is my hero for sure :-)

Wish your mom a speedy recovery. I am glad that she wants her story to be shared with others to increase awareness of this wicked illness.

I don't blame her for putting it off. I do not want to have it done but I don't think women need it until 50 then every 5 years is that correct? Seeing that there is a history of it in your family it will be very important for you to get checked routinely.

True, I don't look forward to it, either. I think you are right - the general guideline is 50, though that can change if you have family history of it. (40 for me) I thought it was 50, and then 1 every 10 years if they didn't find anything the first time, though you may want to double check me on that

I always see the pink ribbon. I didn't know there's a blue one. Are there other colors?

Vince has here every few years as do his siblings. They are all somewhat 'at risk' due to genetic issues.

Ah good for Vince and his siblings too. It's good to be on top of that - esp. with the extra risk

You are right, a simple test to catch it before it turns into cancer or have cancer and go through hell.
