Is Organ Donation Ethical?

There is a village in Pakistan where 75% of the population have donated their organs, triggering a debate worldwide whether organ donation was ethical. It has become a multi-million dollar business of the rich in that part of the world. From the ongoing discussions, I realize that there are favorable opinions and not so favorable opinions regarding organ donations. There are sectors of the society which do not favor organ donation, usually from the religious sector. They warn of the danger of the so-called “commoditization of organs”, springing from the idea that what is not in use is for sale. There is actually no sense of ownership. It removes responsibility of individual of his own body. It has no altruistic motivation at all. One favorable idea for organ donation is that it saves somebody else’s life. Do not majority of organized religions believe on the importance of sacrificing oneself for others? Christians hold that Christ offered his life so that “others may live”. We are just stewards of our own body which we do not own. God has full ownership of His creation, including our physical body and its parts. Organ donation is the most altruistic act a human being does to his fellow human being, giving the latter a new lease on life. I used to attend a First Aid Training Seminar by the Red Cross. And it was there that I learned that people can override ethical discussions regarding organ donation if the individual person carries an “organ donor” card, in case of death. I find this the safest way to avoid legal complications especially in countries where there is a lacuna in view of donating organs. Photo credits: Pixabay

Here we can donate organs but not sell them. I hope that helps to keep it ethical.

@Junbals Organs are needed. But donation solves the ethical problem for me.

That is right - it is ok to donate, but not to sell. That could resolve the ethical dilemma.

I think that SELLING organs is unethical but I think DONATING organs is fine. As you said, it is generally religious reasons when people are against organ donation. Here in England, we will have 'opt out' organ donation from 2020. At the moment, people have to actively register to donate their organs (which I feel is ethical because it is their choice and it is saving another life or lives). From next year, though, it will be assumed that everyone will be an eligible organ donor unless they specify otherwise or are from an exempt group. While I don't think there is anything wrong with choosing to donate organs, I'm a little on the fence about whether 'opt out' is as ethical as 'opt in'.

@Junbals our current 'opt in' system means that people are not obliged to donate organs but can make the choice to be a donor by registering as one. 'Opt out' means that everyone will be a donor unless they register themselves as not wanting to be. Neither way is necessarily for or against, although organ donation is encouraged here.

Opt out or opt in? Does it mean for or against organ donation. It is just a unique way of expressing it.

I would leave that for each person to decide? However, a question comes to my mind. How much did Christ charge for the sacrifice he made?

For me, it is unethical if people sell their organs.

Selling makes the issue unethical, I agree.

I think the debate is not about the voluntary donation of organs but the widespread selling of body parts of people from poor countries to people in the affluent western countries. This has also become big business not only for legal companies but also criminal syndicates that resort to kidnapping and killing young children for their healthy organs.

The sense of voluntarism of organ donation is what makes it ethically acceptable. Thanks.
