Have you eaten a Siopao or steamed bun before?

The other day, I was craving for siopao. Siopao is a Filipino steamed bun filled with pork or chicken stew and boiled egg. I couldn't buy it here and so I just made my own Siopao.
I remember in the 80's and in the 90's that I was making a lot of Siopao for myself and for my Filipina friends who visited me. Making Siopao is a lot of work and so I made a dozen or 2 for freezing just in case I was craving again.
So it was more that a decade that I have not made this food. I was glad I still know how to make these steamed buns. I gave 2 pieces to my Pinay friend and she told me I could make some for sell. Yay! That would be great.
Anyway, I would love to make some more next week as what I have made were all eaten fast.
So how was your day/evening?

I had eaten the original Siopao at Ma Mon Luk, birthplace of the original Filipino Siopao and mami in Manila. We always ate there when I was a kid and up to my teens. I could understand your craving lol!

@thelme55 I chose this article, it's a good read to know the history of Siopao and Mami as we know it now and how it arrived in our country from China, hope you have a good time reading it to fully appreciate the siopao that you are making or will be makeing. I come from a family that use to own shops in Manila that's why we use to frequent this place in Quiapo.

@thelme55 maybe it's because you were born and raised in mindanao, not in metro manila, so you're not familiar with ma mon luk

You enjoy cooking and baking, Ms. Thelma, so why not take orders for siopao? You should set a minimum number for one to order of course :) "Hobby na, money pa" hehehe! When we were small kids, my mother used to make siopao too :)

@florelway Yes I liked, I do not eat burgers, I do not like. I eat minced meat patties but in a dish with vegetables and potatoes, never in a bun.

Not really a lot of effort for me as I love baking and cooking. When I was in the Philippines for a few months, I only had to go to the mall or chow king to eat Siopao but here in Germany, nobody is selling it. So, I have to make my own @florelway.

Siopao when I was young was like the Hamburger of today. When we don't have those hamburger before Siopao was very popular back then. I remember my father would buy one for each of us and bring that to movie house to eat it there. I would eat one and would fill my tummy quite ok.
But now looks like Hamburger is the thing of the day as Siopao is not that popular except of course if you are in a Chinese Restaurant.

@thelme55 Actually I am not a fan of hamburgers as well since I grew up with this food before. But as I visited my city it is now hamburgers are sold more as many contemporary restos would offer hamburgers than siopao. But still there are those old fashioned chinese restaurant that still sell this in the city.

Yes, it was like that when I was young, too but I would want Siopao more than hamburger. In fact, I only eat hamburger when I am so hungry and no other food to eat nearby @rsa101. I can't remember when was the last time I have eaten hamburger.

Yes, it was amazing indeed @hereandthere. You are right. My friend and I are already making longganisa for orders and making Siopao will add to it.
Is it not great?

@thelme55 longganisa is a great idea! they can have it with rice, with bread/mayo/lettuce/tomato or even add it to pasta. how did you learn to make longganisa? is it skinless?

@hereandthere yes, it is skinless. I learned to cook Filipino food when I got married. I bought a Filipino cookbook in 1983 when I went home for 3 weeks. That's how I learned making skinless longganisa, Siopao and other Pinoy food. Mind you, when I got married and far away from home, I only know how to cook tinola and Inon-onan (fish cook in vinegar.)
My cravings of Filipino food away from the Philippines taught me how to cook.

Siopao is just like the Japanese steamed buns but the filling is very different @DesirousDreamer. Usually the Japanese and Chinese steamed buns are sweet but the Filipino steamed buns are mostly filled with fried pork or chicken meat and egg slices. Thanks for commenting. Happy weekend.
