It Doesn't Stop

Fortunately I finished figuring my taxes yesterday. I filed the federal taxes electronically and got the notification they were accepted this morning. I printed my copy of the state tax to mail tomorrow. So that's pretty much it with taxes.
Today I finally figured out what all those pop-ups about my needing to activate Windows mean. I guess when they replaced my hard drive about a month ago, it made Microsoft unable to detect my original copy of Windows 7 anymore and it now thinks I have a pirated edition. I ignored the early pop-ups because I was afraid they might be scams and if I clicked them I might get a virus. I'm always suspicious of pop-ups telling me I need to do something and I don't understand them. I was very busy with taxes and didn't have time to look into it. Now I have to. But the shop that put the new hard drive in is closed on Sunday.
I just discovered that if I don't activate, which I can't do without an activation key, my screen background will turn black every hour, pop-ups will keep coming every hour, and I won't be able to do any security updates again until Microsoft is happy. So I'll also have to call the computer shop tomorrow to see what I need to do about this. At least I'm not still trying to do taxes when these bizarre things start to happen.
Sometimes I'd like to turn the clock back about thirty years to a time before I used the Internet, a time before Windows, a time before smartphones and a time when my kids were still alive and home. That would be 1989. I think life would be much less stressful.
Is there a time you'd like to go back to?

How is it that you do not have the Activation Key of your Windows 7? This comes with your computer, not with the Hard Disk, usually there is a sticker behind the desktop computer if it is pre-installed, if not you have the sticker on the original box of Windows 7.

When they change the hard drive it messes up the activation code from the old system. I called the shop and they told me where to find the sticker. I took a picture with my phone, enlarged it so I could read the phone, and now it's taken care of.

@bagarad I know because my husband changed already twice his HD to have more capacity and he had to re-activate Windows 7. He told me yesterday that there is a maximum number of times you can reactivate, but I cannot remember how many he told me.

Sounds like a scam to me. Heh. I just got a call telling me that Microsoft has been told to cease operating, and that I have a refund coming. If the message weren't so garbled, I'd forward the "phone number" to @JolietJake so he could call and mess with them.

Computers may simplify some things...but others? I don't want to go back in time, but I've learned to leave some of the technology alone.

@bagarad It's a good dividing line from today's tech.

Thanks. I got it taken care of today. All I needed to know was where the code was, and the shop told me.

"I'm always suspicious of pop-ups telling me I need to do something" That is a VERY good way to think on the Internet!
Actually my best decade was 1967-1977--I lost over a 100 pounds--moved to Memphis--went into business (Weight Watchers franchise) with my partner, made an enormous amount of money, traveled around the world--had everything I wanted and needed---a glorious time in my life--a big fish in a small pound--then pfffttt! LOL

Yes, the time before I met my late X and tell him NO. Though it would also mean I wouldn't have the children I have now.
I'm glad you found out you need to get the computer taken care of and it's not a virus.
