Have you ever done Morning Pages?

There is this technique called Morning Pages that was invented by Julia Cameron. Every morning after you wake up you are supposed to take pen and paper and do three pages worth of writing. What you write about is whatever is on your mind at that moment. It can be whatever is bothering you or weighing you down. Or it can be good things as well. You are not supposed to worry about grammar, spelling, style, or technique. You just put pen to paper and let the words flow. You are not just supposed to do it once and forget it. You are supposed to do it every morning. Not sure if there is a period of time you should do it for or if it is up to you. Doing these Morning Pages is supposed to clear your mind, lessen your stress or anxiety, and help you take on the day. it can also bring forth new ideas. I have not done this before but I am thinking of giving this a try. Perhaps it is going to help me in some way to take on the day, be more driven, unafraid, and get me to accomplish more. Maybe it will even lead to more writing ideas. Have you ever done Morning Pages?

I have been told to do that in the past and it did help.

I have never done this, but it does sound like something I would enjoy doing. It would be a good catharsis.

@lovebuglena Maybe it would be easier to start with three paragraphs and not three pages?

I've told myself to give this a try but have yet to do it.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I don't know why it has to be three pages but since it does I am assuming three paragraphs will not be as effective as three pages.

I have tried this... three times, actually, because I had several false starts. Some initial doubts about it I had at first were the concern that it would coincide with my regular journal, plus the fact that I am a person who values order, planning, and purpose. Even though I knew no one would see my pages, the thought of it being totally random, sometimes pointless, and not always making sense did not appeal to me. Finally, I gave it one more try at the beginning of the year and just told myself to not worry about anything and write whatever came into my mind as it came no matter how silly and stupid it was. I haven't looked back sense. Now, mind you, I haven't done this every day. And I have added my own little twist of "Night Pages," in which I write a page or two right before I go to bed if I feel my brain has been exceptionally busy (using the same concept). I have to say it all has helped. First off, I have a tendency to rant, so it gives me an outlet without always having to talk to someone. My mind really does feel clearer after I do it. And, believe it or not, I have had several epiphanies as a result as far as better understanding myself goes. The biggest challenge is finding time to do it.

That is a clever idea to do Night Pages. It can probably help one fall asleep if one is stressed or is preoccupied with stuff. I have yet to try Morning Pages. My excuse is I have no notebook for it. But I can always go buy one and it's cheap. Wonder what's really holding me back? Maybe it's also like you say... that it's just random stuff and may not even make a whole lot of sense or not be organized and such. But maybe it's also because I am worried about what will actually come out of me. However, these are all excuses. I should just push myself to give it a go. At least for a few days in a row and then see what happens. I can always quit if I find that it is not for me.
