It's Halloween night in 1902 and Walter Schenck has just finished his dinner. He gets up from the table, bids his little family a good night and grabs an umbrella before walking out the door. His wife and small children would never see him alive again.
Twenty Six Year Old Walter was a teamster and part time city constable. On Halloween night of 1902 he went out to patrol the neighborhood and prevent any mischief that might incur. His body was found early the next morning only feet from his own home. A revolver was found nearby. Early suggestions was of a suicide but the muddy conditions of his clothes indicated otherwise.
His clothing was also disheveled, indicating the possibility of some sort of struggle.
Heads or tails were never made of it and he was laid to rest without justice ever being served.
Found on the below link, written by Nancy Bowers. The above being my own interpretation.
Murder Victim Walter D. Schenck 26-year-old Teamster City Constable 1876-1902 Cause of Death: Gunshot Motive: Robbery Murder Scene and Date Front Gate, Schenck Home 210 Second Street Adair, Iowa Adair County October 31, 1902 _______________________________

Yes, forensics was still fairly new.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Even in our days not all criminals are apprehended.

@LadyDuck Very true. Criminals are becoming more cunning. They know that it can be easier to catch them and so they have to protect their identity, wear gloves, remove evidence etc. It's sad to think about.

Oh yes. I am sure with the advancement of forensics comes the advancement of cunning methods of destroying evidence. It's terrifying to think of, really. No matter how smart our forensics get, there will most likely always be someone who has out-smarted it.

I was just talking to friend about unsolved murders on the way home. It seems like when there is just some random nutcase about..it is pretty hard to solve the crime. Especially when some serial killers drift around areas..it can be hard.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Sometimes people just have the desire to kill with no reason, but like you said, it is probably never really justified, unless you are in a war or something..or it is some kind of mercy killing.

The more they drift, the harder it is. It makes me shudder to think how easy it might be for someone who goes from port to port, or a trucker etc.
This murder just seems senseless. There was no evidence he was anything but a nice man, and so why was he murdered? We'll never know.
That isn't to say a murderer ever has to have a reason to kill

It was the time when it was hard to solve crimes without all the modern technology they have today.

How sad for the family not knowing who the killer was and why they shot him. Ruining their lives so he was not the only victim.

Agreed, the wife alone with her young children. I am hoping their friends and neighbors helped her out until she was able to re-marry or find work. Most likely remarry though, atleast in those days.

It really is, and there are so many cases that are like this. Not just from centuries ago, but from decades ago.

It really is. It makes me wonder what happened to his wife and children. It was a different time.

I am sure that this cold case can be solved using technology in our day.

What a sad ending. God will surely visit the murderers in his own way and time.
