Do you walk with your eyes and ears open?

Judging by some of my bumps and bruises you might think I do not. I am not really referring to having them physically open though.
I can think of at least two reasons to walk, or live, with your eyes and ears open.
First of all, you need that awareness for your own safety. Who is around you? What are they doing? What is their intent?
That was not what first came to my mind though, when I started to think about this post. I thought of this second idea.
Your eyes and ears need to be open to see who needs you.
Simple as that.
The students where I work go to assembly every day. They sit with their classmates, hear announcements, etc. Say the Pledge of Allegiance. Then they are dismissed, and walk with their class to their rooms.
My lead teacher in resource room, John, and I were walking along supervising various of our kids and talking about the plan for the day. We noticed a little first grade girl, standing back near a janitor's closet with tears streaming down her face. I saw the tears, and asked about it, she pointed to her shoes, and said "I do not know how I am going to get them out." Her shoe strings were tied together, about a foot apart at the most. She did it herself. She got bored or something in the ten minute assembly. She is an interesting child. This is not the first time I noticed her.
Here is perspective on how far she had walked-- she started about one third of the way into the gym. She came down the bleachers, across the gym, through one set of doors, through a breezeway and another set of double doors. With her shoe strings tied together. Supposedly with her classmates and teachers. With others walking past. The councilor had not seen her, she came up as we were fixing things and saw that it would be okay. Otherwise, she would have helped.
I started to work, and so did John. She had to remove her shoes so we could work on them. She had walked the knots very tight. I asked if it was an experiment, she sobbed "yes". I said, "I imagine you will not do that again", she nodded.
My thought this morning was "How many people walked by her, and did not see the tears?" They did not see her hanging back to the side, out of the way. No one helped her. Who had open eyes and ears?
I can name a few people on here that have open eyes and ears. @LovingMyBabies is one. @andriaperry who takes food to an old lady is another. @theHorse is one who has a heart for kids, and music His eyes and ears are open. There are a lot more here that are looking and listening, sorry I cannot name them all.
Oh, one more thing. If you walk with eyes and ears open you see the lovely things of nature all around you. You hear the birds, and even the squirrels.
Let's all walk with our eyes and ears open.

That is sad. I often try to help people when they are struggling. Even if it is just holding a door open. That can make someones day.

You are surrounded by living things, I would be pretty sure you would pay attention to everything.

@GardenGerty I have too. Horses kick sometimes for no reason, goats like to head butt, especially Willis, and roosters this year have just been down right mean.

It is likely that as long as she was keeping up with the crowd there was no reason to notice. By the time we saw her she was out of line and facing the crowd. Also wonder why she did not ask someone for help. Hopefully she will not try it on someone else as a joke. I have seen that done, though.

It just seems so strange that so many people are invisible to others.

Oh poor sweet angel, I am so glad you were there to help her.
It is our privilege to be like Jesus and be a blessing for others! I personally love being used by my Father.
Thank you for this discussion!!

We live in a world where people walk with ears covered by earbuds and eyes glued to text screens.
