28 years ago this month my unit returned to Ft Bragg North Carolina. We spent 7 1/2 months in Saudi Arabia and Southern Iraq as part of Desert Shield/Storm operations.
28 years later, there is still no monument honoring those who served in what was arguably one of the most decisive military operations in history.
No, we didn't suffer great losses. No, we didn't remove Saddam Hussein from power. We didn't go there to lose troops and while we would have liked to, removing Hussein wasn't among our primary missions there.
However, we did go, we did fight and we did accomplish our goals. That should earn us a monument in Washington DC.
There is an organization raising money for a monument to our war. We're not looking for taxpayer funding to build it, just a spot on the National Mall in DC. It's about time, don't you think?
