Goodbye "One Day at a Time"... again.

I grew up watching the original One Day at a Time. Of course, it was mostly because Barbra Cooper (Valarie Bertinelli) was just to cute and a fun character, but I liked (and identified with) her sister Julie too, but well what can I say, Mackenzie Phillips just wasn't as cute. I was hesitant when I heard they were planning a remake of the show. I even resisted watching for minutes on end. However, friends and my brother kept telling me how much I'd like it, so I gave it a shot. The characters are awesome! They did a great job all the way around. They even did well at presenting a modernized version of the Schneider character. Let's face it, the Pat Herrington "Schnieder" was iconic, but would never fly today. Todd Grinnell as the trust fund baby, hipster, Super worked really well. The topics are all about today, with fun little nods to the original and other roles the actors have played. These are fun because they are rare and fleeting, but hilarious when they hit you with one. I also love that they were willing to take on serious issues of today with some tongue in cheek irreverence. Making it about a Cuban family allowed for a lot of Hispanic flair and decidedly unPC shots. Their struggles are what families do face today, but they didn't lecture or act like you shouldn't struggle with these issues. It's ok. After only three short seasons, Netflix has cancelled it. Standing on a street corner in Cuba, smoking a cigar is the last we'll see of Rita Moreno's Rita, the aging gracefully grandma. Too bad because there was so much Penelope and her world could have brought us, at least as long as the original ran. So yes, I went into it kicking and screaming, and now I'm kicking and screaming NOOOOOOOOO! Another great show gets the ax.

Everyone seems to have watched the show for Valerie Bertinelli. I guess we should be jealous of Eddie Van Halen.

I remember and somewhat liked the original but never even heard about the remake till just now. I usually don't care for the remakes of shows I use to watch. Just never seem as good to me.
