Having held many of the jobs that Americans consider service to our nation, I hear this a lot. We hear it so often a lot of people I served with don't even admit to having done these jobs anymore. It feels to much like fishing for the appreciation. But are military, emergency services, search & rescue, police, fire et al the only ways one can serve their country? While my heart will always have a soft spot for the people who put themselves in harms way, or save lives for a living, that isn't the only way to serve. For instance, if it wasn't for Truck Drivers, none of us service members could do our jobs. Teachers at all levels are integral parts of any community. I don't know about you,but I appreciate the people who move garbage, clean our streets and buildings and run or work in the businesses that keep things us fed, clothed and happy. I also appreciate entertainers. Musicians, athletes, actors, artists of all kinds. I don't know about you, but there have been songs and scenes from films and tv that really helped get me through some rough times. To me, anyone who does honest work and/or invests honest money is serving our country. Yes, the janitor deserves to be treated the same as the CEO because both (and everyone in between) doing their jobs is what makes an economy run and makes our nations and states (or whatever you call your "states") thrive. So, you might thank me for my service, but I thank you for yours!!

You are not wrong, I think most people over look many thing and put a higher value of appreciation on those that risk their lives in the job they do. Of course there are those that don't appreciate anything.

Such a valuable post. Indeed we should appreciate those people who sacrifice their comfort, needs, lives for better living in this world. I am on your side completely.
